My Junior Year

Sat., Sept 16, 1978 ====    I cant believe it!  The Bucks lost to Penn State, 19-0!  Ty Hicks played but didnt do so well.  Schlicter kept getting intercepted.  [Several of my football player friends had told me that Art Schlicter, the much-heralded freshman quarterback - would be starting in the first game.  I was working as a sports reporter that quarter and told my editor, but he didnt believe it!  Wish I couldve seen the look on his face when he discovered I was right.  Its nice to have friends in high places!]

Tue., Sept. 19, 1978 ====    Siebert 4 had a really fun party tonight.  A group of us were by Room 400, and I met Scott, Don, Dan, Bill, David, John, Pat, two guys named Rich, and a bunch of others.  Char started the ice cube fights that led to the whole trash can of ice being knocked over.  The melted ice was all over the floor, and Rich Smith laid down and had someone pull him by his legs so that his shirt soaked up the water.  He went to his clothes hamper and put on a dirty shirt and soaked up some more water!  He did that four or five times and is now known as Rich the Mop!  David and Char did most of the rest of the cleanup.

Sat., Oct. 7, 1978 ====    Sat in Block O for the football game.  Thats where you hold up colored cards to make messages and pictures.  The people there are a lot of fun.  At one point, somebody started snapping their fingers and singing Up on the Housetop, which set off a round of Christmas songs that ended when some guy shouted Happy New Year!  As if that were a cue, everyone broke into Auld Lang Syne.  What a crazy bunch!
The band show at half time featured a folkdance group, and several band members put down their instruments and did the polka!
Met lots of people at PJs tonight - Larry Phillips and Russ Gatewood (football players); Louie, Joel and Rick, who live above us in 622; Jeff Wodeckys brother Chet and their friends Al and Bruce.  Reggie Echols and Steve Moberger (more football players) came in and asked if Bev and I were twins.  I said no and asked if they were (Reggie is black and Steve is white).  Well, they are built a lot alike and theyre always together (theyre also roommates).  I thought it was a good joke but Reggie looked offended.  Sheesh!

Fri., Oct. 13, 1978 ====    On High Street tonight I ran into Tony Amicucci, who also graduated from WGH with me.  I dont think hes a student here, must be visiting someone.  He said Mike Steele, also from our class, died of an overdose while stationed in Germany in the Army.  Wow!  Only two years after graduation and one of our classmates is dead already!  At least, hes the first I heard of.

Thu., Oct. 19, 1978 ====    At the elevators on every floor there was posted a Siebert Stud List, with somebodys idea of the 10 best looking guys in the dorm.  I dont know who did it, but its a great idea, and not a bad selection.  Jon Greissing, Rick Denger, Jim Ellinghausen, Whitey, George Krieski, Art Bradley and Joe Gioffre are some of the names on the list.  Id agree with all those!

Wed., Nov. 8, 1978 ====    Tonight was Bob Webners Spaghetti Omnibus Party.  On their door was a big sign that read: This is the even though we got ripped off today were still having a party party.  We laughed and knocked on the door.  Bob and Ken both answered, wearing bathrobes and red, white and blue face paint.  They put hats and ties on us from a table next to the door, got us drinks and introduced us all around.  They also showed us their wrecked apartment - someone had broken in and took the TV, stereo, albums, money and trashed the place.  Bob borrowed a friends stereo for the party.
Everyone who came in got a hat and tie - hack attire Bob calls it.  Bobs mom had made the spaghetti sauce, and it was better than great!  Amy and I cooked the first batch of spaghetti.

Wed., Nov. 29, 1978 ====    I was reading the paper to prepare for critique when I noticed a Campus Compass announcement for FCA [Fellowship of Christian Athletes] members going to visit Childrens Hospital.  I called the newsroom to ask McKeever if I could do a feature story on it.  He said yes, so I high-tailed it to Ohio Union where the announcement said the guys should meet.  I didnt see a bus or anything, but spotted a guy in a varsity jacket and went up to him.  He said yes, he was going to Childrens Hospital and was sure I could go.  He asked my name and said he was Vince Skillings [football player].  Joel Laser [football?] was leading the group and when he showed up, Vince introduced me to him.  I got to ride in Joels car with Joe Robinson [football], Frank Viscarra [soccer], and Rob Williams (a trainer).  We drove to Smith Hall, to wait for Art Schlicter and Doug Donley [both football].  While we waited, Alan Balen [football] drove up and the guys in our car were trying to remember Alans brothers (the golfer) name.  I said it was Mark, and Joe Rob said, You know everything!
When we got to the hospital, more guys were waiting for us: Cal Murray [
football], Bob Murphy [football, and gorgeous!], Phil Dalton, and John Hansel [a quarter-miler].  We were there about three hours, going from ward to ward, and visiting almost every kid.  Donley was a riot, joking with the kids.  I was impressed.
On the way out, we stopped in the lobby to wait for Schlicter and Dalton, so the guys plopped on the floor to relax.  Dave Lawrence, the Central Ohio FCA director, set up to take a group picture.  Donley said, Hey, get the reporter in here, too!  So I got in with all the guys.  I hope I can get a copy of that!  [
I didnt, but I did get a photo of Schlicter, Donley, Vince Skillings and Bob Murphy.]  I sure am glad I got the idea to go - I had a terrific time.

Fri., Jan 19, 1979 ====    Got a new job, in the library at Upham Hall.  Itll be nice to have money again.  Today I got signed up for payroll, and got fingerprinted at Means Hall and had an ID photo taken.  Then I worked five boring hours in the library.
Picked roles for our negotiation game in poli sci.  I get to be an ambassador.
The housing office called and told me I could take my pick of singles in Baker Hall this weekend!  I cant wait.  It will be so nice to have a room to myself and not have any roommates to have disagreements with.
Charlie gave us a free pizza at PJs.  Weve gotten to know all the guys there so well, that we get all kinds of freebies.  Some of the bartenders will let us put our coats behind the bar, so we dont have to drag them around with us or leave them in a booth for someone to take.  Sure makes things easier.

(FINALLY DONE!!!)
Fri., Feb 23, 1979 ==== Hey, its payday!  $147 today.    When I saw Mike Ryan at breakfast, I wished him luck in the diving meet.  He dives 10-meter against Canada Sunday.
Went up to Don Smeltzers office [
he was a psychiatry professor in Upham Hall, where I had a work-study job in their library], to see about working for him.  He does a lot of stuff with Dr.Gregory and comes in the library fairly often.  Last time he was there, he asked if I wanted to work for him in his office.  He believes in the study part of work-study, he said, plus Ill get to learn to keypunch, which sounds interesting.  The lady who showed me around, Vickie, was real nice.  I think Ill take it.  [turned out to be a very good thing for years to come - I learned some stuff, made good friends and got lots of free Columbus Clippers baseball tickets.]

Sun., Mar 25, 1979 ==== I rode back to school [from spring break] with my cousin Lora Miness boyfriend Bruce, and Stan Reidman.  Mark Powell, who lives on Baker Ground C came too.  When we got to school I couldnt check in because the dorm desk worker couldnt find any record of my fees being paid.  Luckily, Crystal, my RA, agreed to unlock my room for me until we got it straightened out.  Stan was nice enough to wait while I found her, and even helped carry my stuff upstairs.  He didnt want any gas money, but I gave him $5 anyway.  [Got my fee problem straightened out a couple days later, and it wasnt really any big deal, but I STILL have dreams about that!   Dont know why, but I do.]
I unpacked and went to Chars old room to get some stuff she left for me.  after that I went to the newsroom and played Assistant Wire Editor.  Came back to Baker and saw people in the lobby watching Ten Commandments.  I asked Terry [Lintner] if Tom and Greg [Rullman] were back yet and he said he was going to ask me.  I felt flattered that he thought Id be the first to know.
Amy and I went on to PaPa Joes, after ordering a pizza from the newsroom.  Little Steve [
Sullivan, a football player], and Rick, both Craigs, Ward, Tall John, Don and Eugene were there.  Then we saw Jeff Wodecky, and Larry, too.  They said theyll be back again some weekend.
When I got home I sat down to see the end of Ten Commandments.  After it, Jeff followed me to Tom and Gregs for a minute, then we walked upstairs together.  It was good to see everybody again.

Thu., Apr 12, 1979 ==== On my way to Baker from the newsroom, I saw a bunch of people on South Oval and remembered it was our floor picnic.  I had forgotten all about it.  It was fun, and the burgers were so good.  We had some left over and offered them to people who were walking by with their dogs, for the dogs.  One guy with a dog stopped and we invited him to join us.  He looked familiar and it turned out he lived near me on 10th Avenue last summer.  He mentioned our neighbor, Dave Pimsner, whose girlfriend had a bassett hound named Pims.  Steve said Pims was hit by a car a few months ago.  Steve was real nice and even stayed to help us clean up.

Sat., Apr 14, 1979 ==== Set my hair and wrote a couple letters before going to PaPa Joes.  Joe Robinson talked to us a little while.  Later we sat with Art Samuelson and his girlfriend; Donn Landers (Dougs brother); and Jerry, the diving manager.  I could look at Donn all night!  Then Ed Helvey and his girlfriend came in, so we talked to them.
Oar House was pretty empty, but Jeff Sudimak was there, and Haji and Don came later.  We stood at the bar and talked to Sully [
Steve Sullivan, a fellow journalism major].
Went back to PJs and I sat with Dave, who was at the door, checking IDs.  He said he was 23 on the 8th!  Then he went to help clean up for the night and left me and Amy to check IDs.  We asked some of the cute guys for their ID on their way OUT, just to be funny.  A few didnt seem to realize we were joking and gave us dirty looks, but a couple of them stopped and talked.

Wed., May 30, 1979 ====    Had my first "Elsewhere" column [a compilation of wire service stories for the student newspaper] published today.  I did it all myself, from going over stuff with the editor, to choosing, editing and typing up the copy.  Im pretty proud of myself.  Im mad at _____, though, because I took over for her so she could study, even though I had planned on going to see Robert Redford [he was on campus to give a speech].  I gave that up for her, and what did she do?  She skipped studying to go see Robert Redford herself!  What a friend!

Thu, July 12, 1979 ====    Went back to the newsroom after dinner for my copy shift [a time period where a group of people worked at editing the stories for the newspaper].  I decided this would be the night I went to print shop with the editors to see what goes on there.  Im glad I went - I had a great time.  I went over with Linda Camburn, Joe Rookard and Marty Friedman.  Joe was really funny, always doing something to crack us up.  Its funny that, cute as he is, I dont have a crush on him.  On the ride over, Linda and Joe told me that the people who typeset the pages always praise me for how close I get the Elsewhere column to fit in its allotted space.  Sure enough, when we arrived at the print shop, the lady who was working on that part of the paper said Elsewhere had fit perfectly again today.  Linda told her I was the one responsible for that.
Joe asked Joe-the-printer about some things in the shop, so he showed us some of the presses and the old linotype machines.  He also showed us an even older typsetting machine where you pick out the letters by hand.  Then he made a block of type with each of our names, that we could keep!  Cool! [
I still have mine.]

Mon., July 16, 1979 ====   Copy shift was fun tonight, but we had a riot afterwards.  Tom Jung, Doug Paplaczyk and Jim Prusak walked Sally Romoser and me home, and invited us to stop at Mamas Pasta and Brew with them "for a quick beer."  A quick beer turned into 5 pitchers and we didnt leave until closing!  We had a blast, talking and telling jokes and good-naturedly cutting each other down.  Doug has a quick wit and a  great sense of humor.

Wed., July 18, 1979 ====    Amy had to talk me into going to PJs with her and later I was glad I went.  We were just sitting in the kitchen when Joe [one of the managers] came by and asked if we wanted to go to an auction with him up on Summit.  He had been in the auction house earlier, passing out coupon ads, and noticed a mirror that he liked.  So we went back with him to buy it.  It was neat to be able to socialize with Joe outside of the bar.  It made me feel like he really thinks of us as friends instead of just customers.

Fri., Aug. 3, 1979 ====    Went to Rally in the Alley [a regular summer party downtown by the statehouse, with beer and live bands] with Amy and Robin.  I dont believe I finally made it to one.  It was neat, and oh, the beefs there!  We saw lots of people we knew - Blake Brewer, Jodie Shagrin, Bob Gelchion, Cindy Craft, Mike Doody, Rick Story, Doug Paplaczyk, Frank Kelley [all from journalism school], Mark Burton, and others.
Then we went to see "Wizard of Oz" at Ohio Theater.  A little girl next to us cried the whole time, and the kids were so noisy it ruined it for us, but it was neat to see it on a big screen.  I discovered something I had never noticed on TV - when they entered the Haunted Forest, the scarecrow was carrying a pistol!

Mon., Aug 13, 1979 ====    Bob, who works with the Corsons [a married couple in the psychiatry department], across the hall from Don Smeltzers office, took us to see a lion cub today.  Bob is a grad student in vet med and spends time at the vet clinic, where they had the cub.  Raechel, Pam and I were the first to go over with him.  Pam was afraid to go in the cage, but Raechel and I went in.  Little Katie was adorable, but wet, since the cage had just been cleaned.  She attacked Raechels ankles and licked my toes [I was wearing flip-flops]!  She was just like an overgrown kitten, playful and cute, but strong enough that she nearly knocked me over once.  Im glad Bob offered to take us to see her.  It was a neat experience.

Thu., Aug 16, 1979 ====    My boss, Don Smeltzer, took all his employees to dinner tonight at One Nation, at the top of the Nationwide Insurance building.  The ride on the outdoor elevator was neat.  Don said not to worry about the cost, so we all had drinks and appetizers along with our dinners and desserts.  I had a gin and tonic and shrimp cocktail.  Got to try a bite of someones Oysters Rockefeller.  It was pretty good.  My dinner was salad, pork roast, potato cake, baked apple and iced tea.  For dessert I got cheesecake.  Everything was delicious.  It sure was nice of Don to treat us all.

Mon., Aug 20, 1979 ====    Got some time off work to go to the State Fair with Char [my sister].  We spent about 5 hours there and had a great time.  Would have stayed longer but I had to be back in time to sit my copy shift.  [The fairgrounds were close enough to walk to from campus.]  Char went to the newsroom with me, since she knows some of the people on my shift - Sally, Jean Kinney, and Blake.  Char cracked up over Doug Paplaczyks "copy zone" jokes and when Jim tried to hit paper wad "baseballs" using an umbrella for a bat and accidentally threw the umbrella across the room.
When our shift was over, we all walked to Black Forest, put three tables together and ordered 5 pitchers of beer.  Jokes and stories flew like crazy, Doug being the center of it, as usual.  Hes so witty and quick, coming up with lines like "Bartender, if you dont turn up the jukebox, well be forced to sing!"
