ADVISOR

Hello and welcome to The University of Tennessee’s CMENC chapter. We are proud to have one of the largest,
most active chapters in the state of Tennessee. Our members are involved in promoting music education activities
on campus and regularly hold important state offices in Tennessee CMENC.
CMENC is one of the most important professional development venues for music education majors. Professional
development activities are important because it is impossible to cover every aspect of music teaching in teacher
preparation programs. There isn’t and never will be that kind of time available. Even if there were, the experiences
students receive would be limited by their teachers’ perspectives and areas of expertise. So, resources outside of
the curriculum are both necessary and desirable.
Membership in our chapter is open to any University of Tennessee student. Membership benefits include:
• Subscriptions to the Tennessee Musician, Teaching Music, and Music Educators Journal
•
Important resume building experiences
• Financial support for attending professional conferences
• Knowledge about music teaching from guest speakers
• Interaction with professional teachers throughout the state
• Leadership opportunities
Our chapter meetings are held once a month, during which issues of relevance to today’s teachers are discussed. Student members regularly attend the annual Tennessee Music Education Association convention in Nashville during late winter and the regional and national conventions of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), our parent organization.
Sincerely,
Dr. David M. Royse
