Northern Renaissance and Baroque Art
Matthias Grunewald:
Isenheim Altarpiece; "Crucifixion"
Temptation of St. Anthony
These works show different influences.  The Crucifixion comes from the Bible while Temptation of St. Anthony shows the influence of Church history.

The Four Apostles
"Having rejected the Gothic art and philosophy of Germany's past, Durer is the first great Protestant painter, calling Martin Luther "that Christian man who has helped me out of great anxieties".  These were secret anxieties, that hidden tremulousness that keeps his pride from ever becoming complacent.  Although there is no reason why any Catholic artist should not have painted The Four Apostles, nor why such an artist should not equally have chosen first John and Peter (indisputably biblical Apostles), then Paul and Mark (mere disciples, not ordained by Christ in the Gospel story, though they were great preachers of the Word), it strikes a definitely Protestant note."
       --Nicolas Pioch
Albrecht Durer also painted this work.  It is another scene from the Bible as the three wise men, the magi, come to visit and adore Jesus.

Bernini:
This statue is one of many statues of the boy-king of Israel, David.  "During the years of his mythological inventions and cardinal Scipione's advantageous protection, the young Bernini carved this dynamic figure of a young warrior-shepherd and in this biblical character nothing was taken away from the problems taht were to be ound in the Ovidian tales."

Caravaggio:
The Sacrifice of Isaac
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was often commissioned to paint churches and other religious works of art.  This shows the influence of the Catholic Church as these commissions would often come from bishops, the Pope, or other religious leaders. Here we see scenes from the Book of Genesis and the Book of Judith.

Rembrandt van Rijn:
Return of the Prodigal Son
Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the most famous painters in the history of art, was obviously influenced in this case by the Bible.  This is one of the most famous parables in the New Testament and it desplays the prodigal son, on his knees at the feet of his father as he begs for forgiveness.
