Topic: Categories.
Background: How your club is listed in the directory of Yahoo! clubs is frequently a make it or break it issue. In the wrong category, prospective members will have difficulty finding you. Yahoo!'s policy has been to allow the founder to initially choose the category for their club while reserving the right to move the club to existing or newly created sublevels or a more appropriate category if it deems necessary according to content and subject matter. Sometimes these moves prove ill-conceived and arbitrary. Occassionally, it is also a matter of having created your club in the wrong category to start with. And, sometimes though rarely, it is a case of a club belonging in several categories at once--being cross-listed. Does the founder have any recourse?

CATEGORIES, LISTINGS |
WEEKLY UPDATE: Still waiting for
that 'weekly' updating of the club listings. Been a month now. Still
waiting for a reply.
Sorry Orion, we are aware that some of our clubs have
not been updating properly (including this one). It's not happening to all
clubs, but certain ones in particular. We're not exactly sure why that is
at the moment. Unfortunately, we have very limited engineering resources,
and our main goal at this point is to upgrade our infrastructure so we can
accomodate the merge, and eliminate alot of the transient bugs you've been
seeing lately. Along with this we hope to solve our updating issues. Hang
in there... we really want to fix this as badly as you do.
CLUBHOUSE NOTIFICATION: Anyway,
the next suggestion is to notify club founders when their club has made a
list either in the clubhouse or the most popular clubs in that category.
It's quite a thrill to see your club on a list and I wouldn't want to miss
it.
I'll see if I can make this happen... perhaps the editorial surfers can
drop you a note, or at least post a message on your message board to let
you all know.
I want to create an Official Club.
Official Clubs occur as a partnership with a band,
athlete, television show, movie, etc.
We use these marketing parterships to promote awareness of Yahoo! Clubs by
getting fans of these groups to use the product.
For the most part, we only partner with groups that have a strong broad
range appeal, so that we can drive a big audience to these clubs. Official
Clubs are the exception and not the rule. Unfortunately, we can't provide
Official Club status to everyone who asks... it's strictly used for clubs
created by our marketing partners.
ABANDONED CLUBS: Also one club I belong to is still going strong, but
apparently the founder has disappeared, so we cannot upgrade any of the
founder functions or even change the club picture.
Is there any way for Yahoo to either contact the founder or appoint a caracter to perform this function?
Unfortunately, we don't have a way to replace negligant founders in
clubs. My suggestion would be to create a new club with you as the
Founder, and invite the Club members to join that club, with the promise
that you will be keeping close tabs on it. The experience for them would
be much better, and i'm sure they will be glad to join your new club.
LISTED vs. UNLISTED: I made the decision a long time back to move my club from listed to
unlisted basically to reduce the chance of spamming and folk joining my
club that I hadnt invited or a club member had invited!! Sometimes
though, when we have special events ,Id like to open the club to all and
make it temporarily listed!! At the moment I cant go back,is there any
technical reason for this that couldnt be simply overturned? Id love the
freedom to keep alternating between the two for sort of private and public
chat functions!!
The reason we don't allow clubs to go from listed to unlisted and then
back to listed is privacy concerns. If I was posting in a club that I knew
was unlisted and private, I have a certain understanding that what I post
will remain private. Thus if I posted personal information in a club with
a tight knit group of friends, i'm secure in knowing it will remain
private.
However, if clubs were allowed to keep changing status, it becomes a
concern that we may be jeopardizing people's privacy by exposing their
information to all people. What do you think? Is this privacy issue
important enough to preserve, or do you think we're overreacting?
As for the link that the Questess mentioned to restore a club to public --
it was a hack and we shut that down after folks started playing with it.
Gosh people! Keeping us on our toes. ;0)
SPOTLIGHT: Then how do you get your club spotlighted by yahoo? Because I really
want people to know about this club.
We have a team of editorial folks who choose the
Clubs to Spotlight. If you take a look at each spotlight, you'll see that
it reflects current events. So that's how clubs are chosen. Based on how
topical they are to current events, essentially. We do this so that people
can see how Clubs relate to real life.
SPOTLIGHT: Ya I think yahoo should spotlight the smaller clubs because those big
clubs have more members then they can handle you know?
We regularly spotlight small clubs as well as large
clubs. You probably don't see this as the case because once we spotlight a
club, it usually becomes a large club due to the increase in membership.
Content is the important criteria, not the number of members.
THE RIGHT CATEGORY: Yes, we do have a team of categorization
specialists, known affectionately as Club Surfers, who go through the
clubs site and recategorizes clubs that are created in the wrong category.
Despite your concerns, i've seen that 98-99 percent of
the time, the surfers make the right judgement when moving clubs. Also
bear in mind that these moves help the club gain members. If you have a
picture taking club in the mountain biking section, no one will find it,
so the surfers will move it to a logical location.
There are also occasions where we have a very general
category, and in this category there are 5 specific clubs on the same
topic is created. In this case we move the clubs out of the general
category and into the specific category to help new users find clubs about
this topic. So for instance if I created a club about Blink 182 in the
general alternative music category, and there was say 7 other clubs about
Blink 182, chances are a "Blink 182" subcategory will be
created, and my club will be moved there. We don't haphazardly build out
subcategories... we do it based on actual trends with clubs created.
If your club was moved, and you feel it was moved in
error, the Club Surfers will review their actions if you drop them a line
using the form below:

CROSS LISTING: I would like to know how to get a club belong
to one category and get listed in another as well..?
Club surfers decide whether a club should be cross listed. You can use
the form I listed above for changing your club category to request cross
listing as well.
