Founders' Christmas Wishlist
AngelPie_Mouse 12/16/99 6:33 pm
Intended as a letter writing campaign.

Dear Yahoo!.:

I am a founder (co-founder) of a Yahoo! Club and member of several founder network clubs. There are a few features many founders, including myself, continue to ask for and hope you will provide. I list them here as a Christmas wishlist. Could we please have the following:

1) Date of member joining the club on either the contact list or the member profile. It is important to us to know when members join so that we can perform housekeeping on our contact list, offer greetings and anniversary notes, and in general, better service our members.

2) Adding CHANGE CLUB COLORS back as an Administrative Tool. You once offered this tool to all clubs. Being able to change and coordinate club art with the seasons etc. keeps the clubsite visually interesting and helps to promote interest in the club itself.

3) Allowing attachment on mass mail (even with standard meg restriction for Yahoo! Mail). Many of us would like to be able send out monthly or bi-weekly newsletters to all members to help keep them actively involved in our clubs. The Send Email feature works well in facilitating such contact, but as a newsletter may run past your undisclosed KB limit, we must frequently send multiple emails to cover the actual send. Being able to attach a document would be of considerable benefit.

4) Changing the "Founder's Homepage" to "Club's Homepage" or adding an option to display the club homepage also. Placing the Founder's URL in the space provided is a redundancy (anyone interested in a personal URL may gain the address by clicking the founder's name and bringing up the profile). And as there may be multiple founders (shared responsibility), the single space may end up being squabbled over or unfairly awarded. More to the point, many Yahoo! clubs have homepages --off clubsite URLs--where they provide more information about the club than may be displayed on the clubsite. Most list the URL for these homepages in the space provided for Founder's Homepage. The label, therefore, becomes misleading and is often overlooked by those visiting the clubsite--some of the very people the homepage was created for.

5) Providing a better, easier to use link for founders to contact Yahoo! Clubs. With considerable digging, this address may be found by most founders, but it would be much nicer to have a more direct link to contact you in the administrative tools.

Sincerely yours,
AngelPie_Mouse

Thank you for your email.

It is through user comments and feedback that we are able to continue to make improvements. We will be sure to keep your comments in mind as we continue to make improvements to our service. There is always something on the drawing board, any many of these have come directly from users like you.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Our very next wish was that they would have a real person to actually read these letters and send a real response rather than this automatic reply.

On July 13, 2000, we held a chat session in CFC entitled "What's Wrong With Yahoo!." During the course of the session and subsequent message board entries, we drafted the following wishlist.

Our Wishlist
  1. Co-founders should have all rights except to delete the club.
  2. Founders should have a choice concerning voice chat use or not. It slows down the chat room.
  3. Want to be able to kick or boot people from chat without banning them from the club.
  4. ALPHABETICAL access to the MEMBERS LIST!!! (links like yahoo addy book).
  5. Join date for members as Founders Feature only (Members or Calendar).
  6. Notice to founders only when a member quits by ID name so that you know which member quit.
  7. Last visit date on a Member ID (founder feature only).
  8. Club backgrounds. Not just colors but the background option. Make it easy just like the colors are now!
  9. Founder's option to allow mailed posts from the message board for their club.
  10. Real people to hear real complaints and ideas to help improve the clubs. Possibly a voluntary peer chat of community leaders from Yahoo! clubs with input to the programming staff.
  11. Removal of non-functioning abandoned clubs and profiles. This is a matter of general housekeeping of your database.
  12. The Delete Message link...could you please move it a little farther away from the Reply link. New co-founders and people who move back and forth between clubs where they are founders and where they are not will appreciate this one.
  13. More than 100 Links, more than 10 per page, and alternative view for alphabetic presentation. Right now, it is almost unusable.
  14. Ability for clubsites to join webrings.
  15. A coffee dispenser installed in all clubs (and possibly one installed for Tylenol or Ibuprophen, too.) Actually, a customizable gimmick space.

About a week and a half later--and we are sure this is just a coincidence--The Official Club came into being.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 8, 2000, I posted our wishlist on the message board of The Official Club. Our reply came in three parts on August 15, 2000 and was reposted to our own message board immediately, also in three parts inclusive of an item that was requested to be added from the CFC message board. [Please note: while there is a suggestion that we were being redundant in some of our requests, this was not true when we posted the wishlist.]

>>The following list represents the concerted interests of a hundred or so club founders.

1) Co-founders should have all rights except to delete the club.<<

As I mentioned earlier, there will be a greater set of permissions in all clubs in the merged product, so this will be possible.

>>2) Founders should have a choice concerning voice chat use or not. It slows down the chat room.<<

I think this should be more of a user level choice. If you would like to use voice chat, you can enable it. If not, don't enable it. In terms of speed, the voice chat doesn't take that much longer to load and use in all actuality.

>>3) Want to be able to kick or boot people from chat without banning them from the club.<<

Again, I already mentioned that this will be an option in the coming months.

>>4) ALPHABETICAL access to the MEMBERS LIST!!! (links like yahoo addy book). <<

This too is in the works. Although there is a problem with the alphabetical jump -- in huge clubs, there could be hundreds of "A"s for instance. Alphabetical sort would actually be less effective in this case than the current page jump ability. I guess the best choice would be to have both navigation options.

>>5) Join date for members as Founders Feature only (Members or Calendar).<<

Not currently in the immediate merge planning, but we'll consider this for a future option.

>>6) Notice to founders only when a member quits by ID name so that you know which member quit.<<

Again, not currently in the immediate merge planning, but we'll consider this too.

>>7) Last visit date on a Member ID (founder feature only).<<

This would also have to be an option under future consideration

>>8) Club backgrounds. Not just colors but the background option. Make it easy just like the colors are now!<<

Yes, i mentioned this too... this will be available when My Yahoo! makes this available since we use their color change functionality in clubs.

>>9) Founder's option to allow mailed posts from the message board for their club. <<

Again, we talked about this previously. I think this makes more sense in the user's hands. If they want to read the message postings from their email, that should be their choice to do so. No one else has to be subjected to the mail, only the people who choose to receive it. Why would you want to prevent them from doing that?

>>10) Real people to hear real complaints and ideas to help improve the clubs. Possibly a voluntary peer chat of community leaders from Yahoo! clubs with input to the programming staff.<<

This is what the Official Club is for. Believe it or not, i'm a "real" person. And i'm listening to your complaints and suggestions for Yahoo! Clubs. =0)

>>11) Removal of non-functioning abandoned clubs and profiles. This is a matter of general housekeeping of your database.<<

Again, I think we covered this... we will be cleaning up abandoned clubs in the next couple of months. If a club has no members log in after a predetermined time (i'm thinking 3 months), the club will be deleted. The founder will receive a warning before this happens, and all they would have to do to stop their club from being deleted is to log in to their club.

>>12) The Delete Message link...could you please move it a little farther away from the Reply link. New co-founders and people who move back and forth between clubs where they are founders and where they are not will appreciate this one.<<

We'll fix this with the merged product... sooner if we can do it easily.

>>13) More than 100 Links, more than 10 per page, and alternative view for alphabetic presentation. Right now, it is almost unusable.<<

The merged product will have added functionality for links, closer to what you've described.

>>14) Ability for clubsites to join webrings.<<

That's an interesting suggestion. With the revamp of Webring, i'll see how possible this is.

>>15) A coffee dispenser installed in all clubs. (and possibly one installed for Tylenol or Ibuprphen, too.) <<

Regular and decaf will be served in every club after the merge. J/K =0P

1594 -- Re: Add This Idea--Delete Club -- clubsproducer -- 8/15/00 2:22 am

>>Presented by a member of CFC: The link to "Delete Club" and "Remove Me" both have verification queries, which seem to be very similar. They are stacked in the member edit section and are pretty close together. It is likely that in more than one instance, as it happened to this member, a co-founder who meant to remove him-/herself inadvertantly deleted the club. It was not the person's intention, but the whole club was gone just the same. Could these links be given a few more degrees of separation?<<

We will rework the current edit/delete my clubs page with the merged product to help clear up confusion on these points.

Our next step is to develop a new wishlist based on items that have yet to be covered. It is incumbant upon us to act with some speed as the proposed merger of Yahoo! and eGroups is to take place on August 31, 2000, after which time TOC may cease to be.
