Doctor's Appointment #2

March 10, 2000

I was a little bit nervous for today's appointment. I knew I had to have all of my bloodwork done, and when I had it done when I was pregnant with Cameron, I almost passed out and got sick to my stomach after leaving the office. This time, however, nothing like that happened at all!

I only waited in the waiting room for 5 minutes or so when I was called. I did the usual...had my blood pressure taken (90/48...aren't I lucky to have such low blood pressure?!) and got weighed. I lost one pound since my last appointment, which I was happy about. Since I started this pregnancy out with extra flab and pounds from Cameron, I wasn't worried at all that I have lost weight. Then, I gave my urine sample, and was called within 2 minutes into the exam room. I had a complete physical, and my OB said everything looked great!! He asked me if I was nauseous lately, since I have lost weight. I told him no, and he told me that it was fine, since I only lost a pound, and also said that if I keep my weight gain under control this pregnancy, he doubts that I will have all the problems with swelling and whatnot like I did last time. You can bet I will watch my weight then, and hopefully avoid being so miserable like I was at the end of my pregnancy with Cameron. Next, he palpitated my uterus and determined I was the size of someone 15-16 weeks pregnant...so my uterus was growing VERY well! If you go by my original due date, I'd be 17 weeks at the time of my appointment, and since I have a history of having a uterus which is about 2 weeks behind what it should be, this makes perfect sense! So although he changed my due date at my first appointment to September 1, I am sure that the August 20 due date is more accurate. We'll see when I have my ultrasound, though! Anyhow, the doc then checked for the baby's heartbeat, but the darn Doppler kept shutting off after being on for 3 seconds or so...guess the batteries were worn out! He did find the heartbeat though, and said it sounded great and strong!! He never did tell me the heartrate, so I am guessing he didn't get to hear it long enough to calculate what it would be. It was still WONDERFUL to hear my little angel in there, though!

After the exam, it was time to get my blood drawn. She found a vein very quickly, and it was almost completely painless. I was very greatful to have had a competent nurse take my blood, especially since she had to get a lot of it for all those prenatal tests they do. That was it!! My next appointment is scheduled for April 7, and not only will it be a regular OB appointment, but I will also have my ultrasound then!! My husband and I (along with our families) cannot wait! My best friend, who went to the same OB practice as I do, said they give you tons of pictures and will even make a video of the procedure for you if you bring a tape! Hopefully they'll be able to determine the sex of the baby, because I think my husband and mother-in-law will just BURST if they don't!!!
