A
powerful earthquake centered near the Indonesian island of Sumatra
toppled buildings on Wednesday and
set off the first of several tsunami alerts.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the Commerce Department and
seismologists working in the region said tide-gauge readings showed
that the first earthquake, which had a magnitude of 8.4, had
generated small tsunamis that struck nearby shores, and that it
might have caused some destruction along the coast.
The second earthquake struck about 200 miles to the northwest of
the first earthquake’s epicenter. The United States Geological
Survey reported the second quake’s magnitude as 7.8.

Wednesday 12 September 2007 at the dusk
after praying, I read the holy book. In the middle of reading it,
all of a sudden I felt dizzy, like swaying left and right, and there
was some sounds of cricketing on the ceiling like when it was an
earth quake, but the tremor was not so strong. Since it was the
first night of the fasting month of Ramadhan, what came to my
mind was that probably the Ramadhan came with stronger power this
year so that I felt like some unseen things with strong power
came down from the sky.
A few minutes later after I finished the
reading, I went out of my room to take some drinking water and it
was then I realized from the TV news that there has been an
earth quake felt mostly by Jakarta people who were on the tall
buildings. The epicenter was in Bengkulu, a 7,9 magnitude
earthquake devastating some houses there.
I certainly hope that people suffering
from the earthquake there could accept it wholeheartedly and
steadfastly withhold the difficulties. With every difficulty there is
ease, relief. Since it happened at the first night of fasting month of Ramadhan, hopefully it was a sign from above that every pray would
have wider opportunity to get answers. Or if using the Internet
terms, there is a broader and faster 'Kilobyte per second' to send the pray much
faster, to be processed and replied sooner.
