Telecom Magnate Carlos Slim
Reportedly Overtakes Warren Buffett as World's
2nd Richest Man |
|
MEXICO CITY (AP) --
Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim has quietly
overtaken investor Warren Buffett as the world's
second-richest man and is close to wresting the
top spot from Bill Gates, Forbes magazine
reported Wednesday.
In the two months since Forbes calculated its
2007 wealth rankings, the 67-year-old Slim's
fortune rose $4 billion to $53.1 billion, while
Buffett's holdings slipped to $52.4 billion as
of March 29.
In an article on its
Web site, Forbes attributed part of Slim's
"amazing run" to a 15 percent increase in the
stock price of Carso Global Telecom, part of a
larger rally in Mexican stocks. Slim's America
Movil cell phone company also soared on news of
a possible acquisition of Telecom Italia.
In the 2007
rankings released March 8 -- but prepared almost
a month earlier -- Forbes had listed Slim as the
world's third-richest man and estimated
Gates' fortune at $56 billion.
Slim said shortly
afterward that he wasn't concerned about his
ranking or taking over the top spot, but he
expressed differences with Buffett, the
chairman of Berkshire |
|
Hathaway Inc., and
Gates, the chairman and co-founder of Microsoft
Corp.
"It's not about
having who knows how many bonds, to spend them
on whatever one wants or live it up all year,"
said Slim, an engineer who wears modest suits
and whose main indulgence appears to be
expensive cigars. "I don't have apartments
abroad. I don't have a house abroad."
Slim, who owns
Mexico's dominant phone company and has holdings
throughout Latin America, said his vision of a
businessman's role in the world is at odds with
that of Buffett, who announced last year he
would donate $1.5 billion every year to the Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation.
"It's very
interesting, because he leaves those who are
running his affairs the responsibility of being
very profitable," Slim said of Buffett. "If
they're inefficient or don't get real-term
returns, they're not going to be running
anything."
"Our concept is more
to accomplish and solve things, rather than
giving -- that is, not going around like Santa
Claus," Slim said. "Poverty isn't solved with
donations."

Approximately one month after my
previous letter of I wrote
Andrea’s Painting Like Related with Mr. Carlos Slim Helu, about
Mr. Carlos Slim Helu becoming the third world richest person in this
year of 2007, came another news on April 11, 2007 that he has now
moving up to become the second richest person in the world.
According to the news by AFP from the source Forbes.com, Carlos
Slim Helu quietly slipped past Buffett at the end of last month
thanks to his rising stock, and was valued at the close of trade
Wednesday at 53.1 billion dollars, 700 million dollars more than
Buffett, Forbes.com reported Wednesday, April 11, 2007.
I need to write here that it must have
nothing to do with my writing about him a month earlier.
This is important to explain here,
otherwise I could be accused of having the ability of "Midas touch,
everything I touch turns to gold". I have no such ability, and it is
important for me to clarify this or otherwise it could burden my
moving to the eternity.
Another interesting thing related to
that news is that such news emerged on CNN's news ticker after I wrote an
e-mail to Mr. Vincent Lo regarding the same Andrea's painting. The
reason for my writing to Mr. Vincent Lo was because when I worked
the painting, I whistled the old song of Don McLean about Vincent Van
Gogh, like I wrote in my previous letter
Whistling Vincent, And the Hilton Scandic Was Sold.

This is not the first time similar thing
happened to me. Like I wrote in the first paragraph of
Boris Yeltsin Dies, "............Monday 23 April 2007, I browsed
the Forbes magazine website to search for the top five
richest persons in 1999, 2000, 2001. Because there
was something interesting back in 2000, whereas after I
attended a seminar and product launch of Oracle products in
Shangri-La hotel Jakarta, a few days later there was the
news about Larry Ellison, the boss of Oracle, turned to be
the second richest man in the world."
Then again, of course it has
nothing to do with whether I was some kind of lucky charm,
because it could have been because the stock price of Oracle
was up. Or maybe some stock brokers happened to get inspired
by my rare visit to Oracle event and causing the buy up of
Oracle shares in the stock market.
Nevertheless this caused me to apologize
to Mr. Warren Buffett. Since it makes me "owe" to Mr. Warren Buffett
for the second time, because for the second time someone else
slipped past him to be the world second richest man with my
"indirect interference". And again, most of all it must have been
nothing to do with myself, I have no ability to do such
interference, and it is important for me to clarify this or
otherwise it could burden my moving to the eternity.
