Recasting the east has revived constitutional debate in Germany; highlighted the institutional foundations of economic decision making; and reopened the question about the democratic foundations of German political culture in the west and especially in the east. In an international context, a larger and potentially stronger Germany is now at the centre of Europe, a Europe which includes the European Community but also stretches east beyond the former Iron Curtain. German Politics was launched in 1992 as an international forum for academic debate and political analysis on Germany, its changing role in European and world affairs, and its internal structures including political economy, constitutional law and social analysis. German Politics offers research articles from leading scholars in their field; each issue includes a substantial review section.
"The murder of the European Jews in the Second World War was unique. Never before did a state decide to kill a specific group of humans -- including old people, women, and children -- without any reservation or examination of the individual case, and enact this murder with the means of State power. Unfortunately, FDR has been listening to the State Department instead of his wife. I hope she'll be able to convince him to change course, because so many lives are at stake. Polish dukes and kings, such as Boleslaw Pobozny (1221-1279) and Kazimierz Wielki (1310-1370), appreciated their talents and thus granted them privileges and conditions for a peaceful life. Boleslaw Pobozny's Charter of Kalisz (1264) guaranteed full security for Jews, their communities, and property. Jewish traderstraveled to the countries of Eastern Europe with their wares. They founded staging points for traveling Jews; many occupied themselves with commerce and crafts. Refugees from one powerful Khazar Empire located between the Volga and the Don Rivers, smashed in 965, wandered to the lands of Poland and settled here permanently.
