The Modern Paranormalist
So I've said something interesting or perhaps challenging or maybe you're here out of curiosity. But then you see the title and you go into stereotype mode because only deranged people have any interest in such subjects. But if you actually look around my website you'll find little talk about ghosts or spoon bending etc because although I believe there is validity to most areas of the paranormal I have become bored with who does or doesn't believe in it.
This is not arrogance on my part but is because I realised that this debate is centuries old and I'm much more interested in why it remains unresolved and why it is such a divisive subject. From a historical perspective one of the key factors I came to understand was that all major institutions have a problem with the paranormal because of it's destabilising effect upon society due to the attendant paranoia and hysteria that goes with it... whether or not there is genuine phenomena at the heart of all the commotion. However as society proceeded through the Industrial Revolution to present times, with all it's technological and economic advancements, that threat to society's stability became more secondary in nature, in that if you disturb the Science / Business powerhouse you could disrupt the econOmic prosperity that flows from it. This was a clear motive for bias in any 'official pronouncements' or 'scientific investigations' into the validity of paranormal events and clear reason for society to want to believe in them. Nobody wants to hurt the goose that lays the golden eggs.
But then as we entered into the last decade of the last century all of this debate had become a bit old hat. The paranormal, UFOs, Conspiracy Theories and a distrust of authority were everywhere with scientific and sceptical objections being sidelined. Although the Internet played a key role in this, the most visible and influential dissemination of these ideas came from the mainstream media. It had broken ranks from the establishment and along with reflecting that general distrust in the institutions that have power over us, it promoted belief in the paranormal as well. It did all this because all it's market research told it that this was how a critical mass of the population was now thinking.
Now this whole subject is far too involved to go into here and I just wished to give an idea what was on this site and these observations (and others like them) on how the paranormal has been kicked around like a political football have made me more interested in the implications of all kinds of information for society. And so hence the diverse range of subject matter on this site, from the seemingly frivolous world of the Media to more earnest 'academic' material. They are all written in a simple direct style mixed with humour and that's because, although I'm earnestly serious about my writing I don't wish to seem po faced.
To cope with this diversity I've tried to group my writings and stuff into a few main headings, however there is much overlapping between them.

Newsgroup Postings - These are articles meant to attract people to my site by being hopefully thoughtful and provocative and cover more 'ordinary' subjects.

Mostly 'Paranormal' Stuff Although I use the word 'Paranormal', as I said in my intro these are not your standard views on these subjects.

My Dowsing Story - Via dowsing I've proved to myself the validity of things that seem to have no conventional explanation and in this section I recount some of my remarkable dowsing experiences.

My Original Songs - I am firstly and foremost a musician and I would describe this music as well recorded, alternative pop. Limited in number by the restrictions put by Yahoo on their freebie site

    Thers's also
Book Reviews in which I discuss the books that have influenced me. A section on The Fortean Times in which I crtically review it's editorial stance. In The Paranormal in the Media there's a collection of reviews on old TV programmes about the paranormal. Most of these sections are archives and won't get changed .....though perhaps they might, it all depends on any responses I get. And lastly Kicking the Cat where I mildly let of a bit of steam on stuff that irritates me.
