FAQ & TRIVIA

DVD Random Frames

1.: “Πότε θα το βγάλεις; (when will you put the DVD out?)

The DVD of the above listed documentaries, is out since July 2005. It is available at bookstores, art, gift and souvenir shops, in Naxos town.

Mt. Phanari: view over eastern Naxos and Donoussa Island

On the way to Photodotis

2.: Why did you not include any shots filmed in winter?

The four films included in the DVD, where shot in June, April, November and October, respectively. I think this covers pretty much all seasons of the year. Eighteen minutes of landscapes of central Naxos, as well as of beaches of the island, covered in snow, were already included in my other DVD, namely “Sites & Sounds of Naxos” (vol.I).

3.: There are too many general and wide shots of monuments and places referred to, in the narration. I would like to see more close ups instead.

This is a documentary series, which is planned to include 21 episodes. The monuments and places shown in this DVD in wide and panoramic shots, will be thoroughly and in detail presented in other episodes.

Mt. Zeus flora, s.sp. Cistus Creticus, June 19th

Zeus Cave

4.: What about money? Where do you get funds from?

This is a self-financed, independent production. I did not receive any funds. Yet, I’ m looking for sponsors, to be able to complete the series.

5.:  Why did not you release the DVD in the usual DVD-case and with a nice eye-catching DVD-inlay cover?

Actually, I did design one! But as this would raise the cost by as much as 5 Euros a piece, I called it off, and turned to a plain transparent disc case with a plain back cover.

Philoti Square

Agia Marina Chapel

6.: These documentaries, are fine for the greeks, but what will the non-greek speaking, understand out of it?

All the documentaries on the DVD are subtitled in detail in English, as well as in greek (for the deaf and hard of hearing). Try pushing the “subtitles” button on your remote.

7.: The DVD advertises 96 minutes running time, but it only lasted about 40 minutes?

That’s because you only played title one. Try pushing the “next” button on your remote, to play the next three titles.

Aria

Philoti, at the feet of Mt. Zeus

8.: Why did you choose cretan music as a music bed in “Panareos”, while this is a movie about Naxos?

I chose to include music of the Aegean, music of the islands in general and not exclusively music of Naxos, as music beds. It fitted better, I think, in terms of variety, pace, mood, atmosphere, and connotation.

9.: What about the ancient coin, you showed in “of Zeus Milosios”? Was it roman or Venetian?

It was indeed imperial roman, as I suggested the very first moment I saw it! I tried a gooogle search, using the keywords “MARCIA OTACILIA SEVERA AVGUSTA”, which led me to a plethora of sites about roman coins. I even found sites that sell or auction coins like this one, with prices between 30-150 USD. At its time, time of recession, the value of the coin represented a soldier’s wage, which would buy three loaves of bread. The most touching of all, though, was the Curriculum Vitae of the portrayed Augusta (244-249 A.D).

10.: What about the French King’s coat of arms, that Compte De Nointel had inscribed on the rocks? Did you locate them?

I omitted this part of the narration, to keep the movie shorter. Reflecting on it, I should have included it. Well, as Piton De Tournefort, informs us in his “Travels”, Nointel’s inscriptions had already vanished in 1700, hit by lightning. As the greek poet Kostas Ouranis pointed out in 1936, about “travelers inscribing their names on walls, seeking a cheap and frivolous immortality”, this was also the case with Nointel.
