ISLAMABAD — The families of three Japanese climbers who died in an avalanche last year have donated a bus to a school in Hunza district.

The donation was made as a part of a goodwill gesture to acknowledge the efforts of the locals who tried to rescue the three Japanese climbers who were swept away in an avalanche from the South Face of Batura-1 7785 metres.

The three Japanese climbers represented Fukuka Alpine Club and were on their way down from 6500 metres and had also radioed at the base camp that the weather is bad and they are coming down.

Yasunobu Fujita, 27, Tsuyoshi Seki, 28, and Hirotaka Sugiyama, 42 were swept away  and their bodies have not yet been recovered todate.

Sixty-seven year old Atsushi Inenaga led the team which vied for the first Japanese ascent and the second climber with him was Takasaki Wataru.

The relatives of the deceased donated 1.5 million yen, part of the condolence money given by their friends and colleagues.

The school is being run by a local non-governmental organization which has nearly 400 students. The children walk for an hour to reach the school and the gesture from the deceased family members and friends is to help them carry on with their studies.
