| Scrimmage Sundays - Due to the fact that our area does not have a lot of hockey players, we try to find out if we have at least 6 players before we arrange to meet. I send out an e-mail during the week soliciting interested people for the Sunday. Everyone is asked, and expected to respond to all so that we know if we have at least 6 to make the drive worthwhile. The reason being that we do not want to drive all the way there and find out we have less than 6 which would be a tough amount to scrimmage with. If you contact me ([email protected]) and ask to be put on the mailing list, please respect everyone and respond to all. This makes for a successful scrimmage on Sundays! Tournaments - When we go to tournaments, you pick up your own costs, we do split the tournament fees and also try to share rooms to reduce the costs. | The Cleveland Confusion recently participated in the 2nd Annual Midwest Tournament in Cincinnati (February 11th -12th) and brought home the beautiful champions trophy!
In pool play on Saturday, the Confusion defeated Indiana University Club 4-1, Centurions M. 4-2, and tied with Chicago Orange 1-1. Cleveland struggled throughout the day to find their rhythm and had to rely on their experience to get them through some tough games. On Sunday, in the second cross over game of four, Cleveland overcame a talented Lexington side 4-2 and assured themselves of a semi-final berth. Michigan State University Club then brushed aside IU Club 6-1 to set up a clash with the Confusion. In the semi-final, Cleveland appeared to have scored early through Ahyodha Kishna with only 2 minutes on the clock, but after consultation the umpire overruled himself and blew for a 16 yard hit instead. The game then started getting scrappy with neither side wanting to give an inch to the other. Cleveland duly scored first when Danish Mahmud converted from a penalty corner injected by Frank Rosen. Michigan fought back and leveled the scores shortly after in similar fashion with their goal coming off the stick of Rolf van de Kerkhof. The game ended on a sour note, Rosen was shown the yellow with 2 minutes left, and then with about 47 ticks left on the clock Yaphet Edghill was given red. His card was controversial because he was called for pushing. What actually happened was his feet got tangled with a stick and he fell forward onto the opposing player. Unfortunately, the umpire did not feel the same way. This led to a penalty corner with time expired, but Cleveland held strong and did not concede a goal. The game was going to be decided on penalty strokes and Cleveland was missing one of their stronger penalty strokes takers Rosen, who could not take part because of the yellow card he received during the game. Kishna and Mahmud were joined by Laura Seidel to take the strokes, and Megan Stengel was in charge between the uprights. Stengel had done an awesome job in goal throughout regular time keeping MSU club at bay, particularly during a period when Cleveland had to defend a host of corners against them. Seidel, Kishna and Mahmud calmly converted theirs for Cleveland, whilst Inako Puzo and Leticia Fragapane did the same for Michigan. However, van de Kerkhof put his stroke wide and allowed Cleveland to clinch a spot in the final against Chicago Blue. In the final, Cleveland did not have any subs because Edghills red card carried over and Megan McMurty had an injury to her thumb that prevented her from holding her stick. Chicago Blue had a fine side that was always going to be tough to beat; they had advanced by beating their other team, Chicago Orange 3-2, - also on strokes in the other semi-final. Cleveland took the lead when Mahmud who had an excellent tournament, received a pass from Kishna and promptly gave it up to Courtney Fretz who made no mistake in putting her side ahead. Strong defense by Rosen and Jessica Reading, aided by Kishna in the central role kept the Chicago forwards led by Greg Best at bay. It was plain that McMurty and Edghill were sorely needed because of how tired Cleveland was without them. Some stout defending by Simon Allen was having a toll on the Cleveland forwards; however, Cleveland was able to keep the pressure on and scored twice again before Chicago was able to find the net with about 2 minutes remaining to make the score 3-1. But by that time the game had effectively been over as a contest, and when the final horn sounded Cleveland celebrated their success. It was also the second trophy for Kishna in this tournament, having won it with the host team, Cincinnati Centurions, in 2005. This was a great way for Cleveland to start competition in the Midwest for the 2006 season! The tournament was excellently organized and run by Degsy Aspinall and the Cincinnati Centurions. It was a fun filled weekend with entertainment on the river Saturday night, graciously provided for by the hosts; and it was fun to catch up with old hockey friends. Cleveland certainly plans on defending their championship at this tournament next year! More pictures will follow this article, so be sure to check back. Also, video will be a new feature added to the website via a subscriber link similar to the one that offers the pictures. |
