| Gaining it's name, from a time when our magickal ancestors had to conduct their workings and keep their witchy identities a secret. They would conduct rituals under the cloak of darkness. Their workings documented and kept in a special place, for their eyes only. Fearing exposure, it was hidden in the shadows. Traditionally made of leather, coloring of black or dark green. The Book of Shadows or "BOS", is a journal of your magickal workings and inner most thoughts. A book blessing is best to write in the front to set the tone or warning to curious eyes.Tools, ingredients, Sabbat/Esbat rituals can be contained in the BOS. Spells can be placed in the book as well, however, many witches will also have what is called a "grimore" which will hold their spells. You will find as you progress in wicca or the magickal arts in general, that you can not contain your work in one book alone. If you can.....my cornal hat off to you. I for one have a couple, for different things, it is easy to create volumes . It is best if your books are hand written fusing your personal energy. However, with the new computer age, many witches now store their BOS on disk or a least a copy. You can decide who (if anyone) may look at your book. Also, what will happen to it once you cross over.
