Dr. Rose Hannah Munro: Also known as: Rose, Miss Rose, Dr. Rose, Miss Munro. Distinguished by her red hair. Does not use her medical title socially (partly to avoid confusion with her father). In her mid-twenties; grew up in London with her father, spending the summers with her mother in New York. Studied medicine primarily in London, with some time spent in New York and Edinburgh. Intended to practice medicine professionally, perhaps in India, despite the "unsuitability" of this profession for women. Is not currently practicing. First appears: 1:1.

Dr. Zephaniah West:

First appears: 1:1.

Dr. Walter Munro:
Rose Hannah's father.Contrary to what early readers inferred from a workshop version, Dr. Munro is a (retired) medical doctor; his degree is unrelated to his fondness for inventing. First appears: 1:1.

Dr. Josephine Murray:
Rose Hannah's mother. Lived in New York separated amicably, on her own insistence, from her husband, whose surname she did not take. Died when Rose Hannah, whom she wanted to follow in her footsteps, was fifteen. (1:1)
