Yes, Dwight Schultz who based his character of Murdock "on a garage attendant" he "came across in Beaumont, Texas", who "wore a little blue hat" and followed him everywhere, "making peculiar motions" was almost axed from the show. In a recent interview with Richard Webber for Daily Express Saturday (29th Apr 2006), Dwight says that "Initially, the show's bosses didn't like my portrayal of the character and planned to fire me. They didn't think the audience would be able to deal with me. I was devastated". However, audience testing after the pilot episode forced them to change their minds, because the character of Murdock received such positive feedback "I was rewritten back in the series".
