Household behavior on solid waste, A case study of Urban areas of Nepal.

Numbers in bracket indicates %

Nepal can be divided into mountains, hills and terai. Biratnagar is in the eastern terai side of Nepal. It is industrial district. Like other places, Biratnagar is also very polluted. Climate of Biratnagar makes the level of pollutant more intense. It is very hot and humid. Throughout the year pollutants in the atmosphere exceeds the standard level. Air, water and lands are equally polluted. Solid wastes alleviate all the forms of pollutants through wind, water and insects.

We all know that we have drainage problem. It is not due to lack of infrastructure but lack of proper waste collection. Those drainage tunnels and pipes get clogged due to the unwanted accumulation of wastes throughout year. Water cannot pass through blocked wastes in pipes and tunnels and city gets flooded.

Do we want to imagine the months like Chaitra, Baisakh and Jestha? Those months are considered to be very windy and it is very hard to survive for all the levels of people in Biratnagar. Wind carries dust particles and wastes, which creates nuisance and is the chief cause of deaths due to diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid, dioherea and many more. We are also aware that malaria is coming back to our town, as the organisms are getting resistant to the pesticides and medicines. If we are clean and our city is clean we will not have any of those problems. We just need to be aware of proper waste collection, transportation and disposal. I would like to say that it is all habit and it is not difficult to overcome the problems on solid waste. It just needs commitment that we will not pollute our hometown, my city. For example; if you are dirty I will not come close to you and will not be your friend. Nepal depends much on tourism and if we do not keep our hometown clean, we must not aspect any tourists to come. Keeping the town in which one live is not the new concept. We have just changed our habits by depending only on municipality.

The wastewater that is accumulated due to wastes collected in the drainage is heaven for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in those waste water and multiplies in numbers. We can get rid of the diseases like malaria, elephantiasis and we do not have to be awake by the bite of mosquitoes. The solution is simple we just need proper education to be environment friendly and work for the betterment of environment. Clean Biratnagar Movement was established to deal with such programs and it is still waiting for the cooperation from people.

The type of waste found in Biratnagar is organic and which can be mostly used to make compost. Bottles, cans, metals etc. can be reused and recycled. BMC has all the technologies and it is waiting for cooperation from people so that it can extend its program in a most dynamic way.

BMC is in town, which is working in our town since 1997 AD It is empowered by Biratnagar Sub-Metropolitan. It has new concept and is working with full energy. As a result we can see the difference in the waste pickups in these recent years. BMC-Silt is trying to bring different environmental projects in our town. It has proper disposal and composting site unlike the municipality, which used to dump waste in the Singhiya khola.

If you have any program, please contact Babu Raja shrestha, the general manager of BMC-Silt. If you have any problems regarding wastes and it is not collected properly contact him at
