An artificial being created in a pocket universe, Supergirl comes to our world and is raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent until setting out on her own. It is when she comes upon the dying Linda Danvers that her life changes dramatically. Linda has been injured in a cult ritual, and having sworn an oath to Linda's parents, Fred and Sylvia, to save their daughter, Supergirl sacrifices herself by merging her protoplasmic body with Linda's.

The blending creates a new and unusual entity, however: For Linda Danvers, who has fallen far from grace, it is an entrance into a world seen through the eyes of a being who only looks for the best in others.

Together, they are a new and powerful incarnation: an earthborn angel, an angel on earth with wings of flame, serving to protect the interests of both mankind and God. The new Supergirl's stories deal with other religious and sexual issues: Linda's former boyfriend is a Satan worshipper. Linda's mother is a recovering alcoholic, now a Born-Again Christian. Comet the super-powered horse-like being to whom Supergirl is attracted is actually a human lesbian, who is attracted to Linda. While the original Supergirl first thought of her self as a guardian angel, this Supergirl actually sprouts wings.

Superman is only an infrequent visitor to the new Supergirl's stories. In the above panels (from Supergirl No. 6 Fe. 1997) by Peter David, Gary Frank, and Cam Smith, Superman wonders about the changes in Matrix now that she has merged with Linda.
