New Resident's Thoughts and Sights of the Loveliest Coastal Town in Maine
Campobello Island's Mulholland Lighthouse's view of the west end of Lubec Village
Summers (June through August) are delightfully temperate, 70s/80s. Be ready to wake up early because the sun rises at 4:40ish. Falls (September through November) are cool and colorful. Winters (December through April) are blustery and snowy, with many activities for the those that arent Florida snowbirds. Spring is late and short (May through early June), but welcomed by all. Dont plan to put in your summer plants until after May 31, because Lubec always has late frost.
If you want to get away from the beauty and serenity of Lubec, you can travel in several directions. Thirty-five minutes from Lubec is Machias, the county seat, which has a small University of Maine campus, some shopping and several restaurants. Or you might wish to travel to a larger town such as Calais, fifty minutes away. It has a LOT of shopping possibilities and a border crossing to Canada. Looking for a larger city? Travel southwest two hours and fifteen minutes to Bangor/Brewer (60,000 pop.) with major shopping, entertainment, great restaurant variety and an international airport. But no matter how exciting it is to see the bright lights of larger towns, its wonderful to return to Lubec.
