Lubecs White Trees

North Lubec Road Hill

Service Berry Trees and Wild Pear Trees

For two weeks in May, Lubec is a profusion of white-topped trees resembling Washington DCs apple blossoms display. North Lubec Road, a five mile peninsula off of Route 189 is the pallet on which these beautiful images are painted.

The local inhabitants know the pure white trees as wild pear trees. Those trees that have a background of red-rust colored leaves with white blossoms are called service berry trees. From a distance this second type of tree casts a pinkish-white hue. When the sunlight is strong, the bright whites and subtle pinks are a stark contrast to the backgrounds of firs, spruces and the multitude of red and sugar maple trees that are just beginning to bud for the spring.

There are few places in Maine that afford such a startling panorama of contrasts. Downeast Maine, and especially Lubec has the most dazzling display in the state. Campobello Island, Canada has a smaller display, but Lubec is overwhelmed with the vision. A newcomer to the area should travel this road before Memorial Day week to enjoy the view.
