The Roxburgh District and Ayrshire Tartan are the main tartans suggested for wear in "Tartan for Me" Book by Philip D. Smith, Heritage Books. Along with the Colvin Tartan for the Colvin and Colven family names. The Clan Chieftian has suggested using the tartans of which collaterial clans your line goes the furthest back too or the ones suggested for use by the Lord Lyon or The Scottish Tartan Society. The most notable of the District Tartans are Roxburgh, Fife, Ayshire, and (Tara District tartan for Colville's from Ireland). Many other districts the Colville's lived and still do live in are Midlothian, Lanark, Kinross, Berwick, Dundee, West Lothian, Argyll, Renfrew, East Lothian, Kilmarnock, Banff, Stirling, Kincardine, Perth, Shetland, Clackmonnon. The major Collaterial Clan Family Tartans includes the Lindsay, Fraser, Keith, Bruce, Crichton, Campbell, Coloquohoun, Crawford, Stewart, Wallace.
Duke of Fife, District Tartan
The background, on which the buttons rest, is that of the modern set tartan for the District of Fife. The majority of the Colville's and Castles and Homestead are located in the Fife fistrict.
The District of Fife tartan was designed for the celebration of the wedding of Louise, the Princess Royal, daughter of Edward VII, and grand daughter of Queen Victoria, to Alexander Duff, the first Duke of Fife. The sett differs slightly from the modern district tartan.
Roxburgh Ancient District Tartan
Roxburgh Ancient District tartan is also listed under the Clan Colville in the reference book, "Tartan for Me". This tartan has been recommended by The Scottish Tartan Society and by the Lord Lyon for wear by the Clan Colville families.
Roxburgh-Red District Tartan
Roxburgh Red District tartan is also listed under the Clan Colville in the reference book, "Tartan for Me". This tartan has been recommended by The Scottish Tartan Society and by the Lord Lyon for wear by the Clan Colville families.
Ayrshire District Tartan
The colours reflect the gold of the rising sun, the green of the land and brown of the coast, the blue of the sea and the red of the setting sun. The Ayrshire tartan is intended for those with connections in the districts of Kyle, Cunninghame and Inverclyde. This Tartan is also listed under the Clan Colville in the reference book, "Tartan for Me".
Dundee District Tartan
The design of the Dundee sett is very similar to that of a
tartan jacket said to have been worn by Bonnie Prince
Charlie at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, now preserved
in the Scottish United Services Museum in Edinburgh
Castle. This version is known as Dundee New Colours
referring to the change of the black stripe from the
original purple.
Tara District Tartan
Tara District tartan is listed under the Colvin and Colven in the reference book, "Tartan for Me". This tartan is recommended for wear by the Colvin and Colven Irish/Scottish Families.
