CLANN WINS KINGS CUP AT FKG It only took ten years, but Clann Nan Con has finally added its name to the list of winners of the Kings Cup. The cup is awarded to individuals or groups who distinguish themselves by performing a superior presentation and displaying great spirit during the fall and winter living history encampments at Fort King George State Historic Site. In accepting the award, Clann Chief Britt Brinson said, I never thought wed have a chance to win this award, since we always stay in the fort, instead of setting up a campsite. But I want to thank all of our guys for their contributions this week in presenting our program. The Clanns program consisted of greeting our guests in Gaelic, telling them about the Highlanders clothing and weapons, and demonstrating our Gaelic musket drill & the Highland Charge. The Highlanders were asked to move up the causeway and set up their demonstration alongside the marsh, near the bluff. Props were moved from the fort to the demonstration site each morning and afternoon. Over 1000 school children from throughout the state of Georgia attended the program, which was held March 5-7. Past winners have included Jim Sawgrass, the Spanish garrison from St. Augustine, & the late Michael Sackrison. The cup made its first appearance in 1994. There have been several multiple winners, including Sawgrass. McCALL TENDERS RESIGNATION Amos McCall, one of the four founding members of Clann Nan Con and Clann Standard Bearer, has tendered his resignation as a member of the clann. Britt Brinson, Chief of the Clann, has sadly accepted it. In his letter of resignation, McCall wrote, It's not fair to your Clan brothers to hold me on (the roster), especially as a color bearer, etc when I have not showed up in over two years to anything. Amos contributed a lot to our clann in its early years, creating our website on May 8, 2002. McCall became the second founding member to leave the clann in the last year. Clann Captain Philip Boyd tendered his resignation in March of 2007. Clann Nan Con was founded in 1998 by the two departed members, along with Mark Tippens and Britt Brinson. CLANN UNABLE TO ATTEND NORTHEAST FLORIDA GAMES For the first time in our ten-year history, Clann Nan Con had to back out of an event. The Northeast Florida Highland Games were scheduled for February 23. Seven members were scheduled to attend. The flu epidemic thats been going around the country took its toll on our clan. One even came down with strep throat. It was disappointing to all that we couldnt make it. The people at NEFHG treat us better than anyone, contributing large stipends to us each of the last to years to help offset our expenses. FOUR TAKE FEALTY OATH Four members of Clann Nan Con took their fealty oath to the clann on Saturday evening, February 16. Clifton Gorden, Cody Hackney, Nick Honzik, and Caleb Geren swore their allegiance to the clann following the Frederica Festival. The ceremony was held in the officers quarters at Fort King George. Gorden has been with Clann Nan Con since 2006. Hackney has been with the clann since 2005. Honzik and Geren both came on board in 2007. Only Honzik had any previous experience as a reenactor. CLANN INVITED TO ATTEND GENERAL OGLETHORPE Clann Nan Con has been invited by Scott Hodges, aka General James Oglethorpe, to attend a program at the Oglethorpe Armory in Atlanta on Tuesday, April 23, 2008. Hodges will deliver a program to the Georgia Army National Guard unit based there. He thought it would add even more flavor if Oglethorpes Highlanders were there to tell their story. If you are interested in attending, please let Britt Brinson know as soon as possible. You may call him at (229) 942-3294. NEW JACOBITE EVENT THIS FALL The Duke of Perths Regiment will host a one-time-only Jacobite event on October 17-19, 2008. The event will be called The weeks leading to Culloden: The Jacobites in Scotland 1746. It will be held at George Rogers Clark Park in Springfield, Ohio. The event will focus on tactical and small party combat between the battles of Falkirk and Culloden. There will also be period Highland games. Clann Lieutenant Michael Ramsey has been in contact with the organizers. They have told him that there will be 1-2 battles a day. Please contact Britt Brinson to let him know whether or not you are interested in this road trip. |
