| The girls flocked around Shane like they always did during lunch break. No wonder maybe, he was one of the most popular boys at college. Always smiling, always kind and helpful, and such a gentleman. Heather stood at the other side of the yard with her two best friends, Donna and Kate. She wasn't as popular as Shane by far, but she did have her share of admirers. She had known Shane almost all her life, and she'd always been secretly in love with him. What she didn't know when they eyes met across the schoolyard, was that Shane had always been in love with her too. The bell sounded and everyone slowly went in again. Soon the only two in the schoolyard were Shane and Heather. "Are you done for the day?" Shane asked. "Yes, I have short days on Fridays," she answered, and put her sunglasses on. "Yeah, me too. Luckily we've got graduation on Wednesday. I can't wait to leave!" he laughed, and kicked himself for not coming up with something funny, interesting or more original to say. But behind the sunglasses, her eyes grew big and they sparkled as she removed them again. He'd always loved her eyes, her dark brown beautiful eyes. They always radiated, they had this glow that made him want to take her face in his hands and kiss her. "Yeah, me too. After this we're free," she said and smiled, breaking the silence that had fallen between them. "Erm so you doing anything tonight?" Shane looked at her, and she shook her head. Actually she had made plans to go out looking for new clothes for graduation with Donna and Kate, but she figured they'd understand. And they could always go shopping on Saturday, couldn't they? She squinted at the bright sunshine, and put her sunglasses on. "Cool," he said. "Wanna go out with me?" Heather stopped breathing for a second, and stared at him from behind the dark of her sunglasses. "Eh" she stuttered, not sure what to say next. "Go out as in going out on a date." he said, and looked at her quickly before his eyes followed a bird's flight in the sky. She stood quiet and looked at him, then his gaze turned to her again and she closed her mouth quickly when she realised she was standing there gaping at him. "Please, Heather." he said. "Yes," she whispered, sure that he was going to start laughing and tell her he was joking. But he didn't. Instead he raised his hands, removed her sunglasses and kissed her cheek. "Wonderful! Can I walk you home?" he asked smiling. "Yeah, sure," she said bewildered. Shane smiled his gorgeous smile at her, and took her hand in his. All the way to her apartment, they walked hand in hand. Heather felt the tingling sensation she always got talking to Shane stronger than ever now, and she just couldn't stop smiling. "I'll pick you up at half seven then, okay?" Shane said. "Yeah, great. I'll try to be ready!" she answered, and they laughed. He leaned over and kissed her cheek before she disappeared into her apartment. Well inside she closed the door, and leaned her back heavily on it. A huge smile appeared on her face, and she giggled. "I can't believe this!" she giggled as she went into her living room, and put her favourite CD on. As the music flowed out into the room, she threw herself down on the sofa with a gasp and put her hands over her eyes. "Oooh!" The sweet sound of the music filled the room, and when she removed her hands from her eyes, it was as if the whole world had changed. She was still smiling when the phone rang. "Yes, hello?" she said into the phone happily. "Oh my God! You're in love, aren't you?!" Kate said. "You better tell us!" Donna demanded, she was on the other receiver. Heather blushed and sat down on the floor. "Well, yes, I am." she started, and her two friends nearly screamed with excitement. "Tell! Tell!" they shouted. "All right, I'm gonna! Well, I was talking to Shane after lunch today, and he asked me out, as in a date!" she said, replaying the conversation in her mind. "I told him yes, and he's picking me up at half seven. And when he walked me home, he held my hand and gave me a kiss goodbye when we parted!" There was silence on the other end, and Heather knew what was going to happen next. She held the phone away from her ear, "And in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1." she whispered, and a split second after a scream came out from her phone. "How adorable!!!! We're so happy for you! What are you going to wear? Where's he taking you? Look at the time, what the heck are you doing still talking to us?! Go get dressed girl, and good luck!" they both spoke all at once. She looked at her watch and saw that it was almost seven. "Oh, I've got to get going girls. I told him I'd be ready when he came, and I should at least try to keep it." she laughed, and got up. "Yes, yes. Of course. Now you go out and have a great night, and the best of luck to ya!" Kate said. "Thank you, and I will." "Oh, and we want to hear all about it!" Donna added. "We'll see about that! Now I've really gotta go. Bye!" she said, still smiling as she hung up the phone. Half an hour later she still wasn't completely dressed when the doorbell rang. "Just a sec!" she shouted and zipped up her skirt. She stopped in front of the mirror in the hall and made sure everything was in place, and looked nice. She knew that Shane was standing on the other side of the door, and just thinking about him brought a smile to her face. The doorbell rang again, and she opened the door. "Wow!" Shane said, looking at her. "You look absolutely gorgeous, Heather." He smiled at her, and she blushed. "Thank you. You look really nice too," she said as he gave her a kiss on her cheek. "Thank you. Are you ready to go?" he asked, and his eyes shone at her. Their eyes met as she looked up, and time froze for a few seconds as they stood still, looking into each others eyes. His hazel-green eyes had always amazed her. They had this kind, gentle look in them, like they were trying to tell her something. Shane was completely under the spell of her dark brown eyes, and he found himself reaching his hand out to touch the soft skin of her face and neck. She felt the gentle touch of his hand, and smiled. The front door smacked shut, and Heather jumped. "Jesus! What was that?" she said, knowing the spell they had been under was broken, for now. Shane laughed, and grabbed her hand. "It was probably just a gust of wind. Now, should we give leaving another chance?" he asked, and she nodded. "Yeah, let's. Where are we going?" Heather asked, and locked her door. "It's a secret. You'll see when we get there." he answered with a secretive smile. He held his arm out and she took it. "Let's go then m'lady." he said, and she giggled. They walked through the park, and they hadn't got very far when Shane stopped and turned to her. "What is it, Shane?" she asked. "Oh, nothing. I have to do something before we can go on," he said. Then he pulled a blindfold out of his pocket and tied it around her head. "Can you see anything?" he asked. "Nope, nothing." she answered. "That's good. It's not very far now, just let me lead you, okay? Here, take my arm," he said, and placed her hand on his arm. They slowly started walking, Shane holding his arm around her waist leading her into the park. They didn't walk very far, and just five minutes later they stopped again. "Stay here, I've just got to fix something. Don't move!" he said, and she felt his arm letting her go. "I won't be a minute." he promised, and she heard him running off. "No one better walk past me now." she thought to herself and smiled when she thought about how silly she must've looked. But no one would come and see her, Shane had talked to the park ranger and he'd got his permission to borrow one of the many arbours in the park. This one was situated in a little clearing between the trees of the park, and away from the walkways. Before he went to pick her up, Shane had left their dinner and lots of candles in the arbour. He'd also bought her lots of roses, which he knew was her favourite flowers, now he quickly lit the candles and ran back down to her. Heather heard him come running back to her, and then he stood by her side. "Okay, all is ready." he said, and started spinning her around. "Just so I'm sure you're lost." he explained, and stopped her. She swayed and he quickly put his arms around her to hold her still. "Thank you," she said and smiled. "Okay, this next part might be a bit bumpy, but just let me lead you." Shane said, as they started walking. "Okay, I trust you. Just don't lead me into any holes filled with mud or anything clever like that." she said, and he laughed. "I won't, promise." He led her up to the steps to the arbour, and there they stopped. "Hmmm" Heather turned her head, "What?" she asked. "Oh nothing, put your arm around my neck," he said, and she did what he told her. Her fingers felt his soft brown hair, and she smiled at the sensation that ran through her as she carefully played with his hair. Shane lifted her up into his arms, and walked up the steps into the arbour. There he put her down, and removed the blindfold. Heather looked around the little, candlelit and rose filled room with big eyes that shone of amazement and happiness. "You did all this?" she finally asked, and turned her gaze to Shane. He nodded guiltily, and smiled his sweet smile at her. "Do you like it?" he asked. "Yes, I love it. It's probably the sweetest, most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me," she gushed. "How did you know roses are my favourite flowers?" He reached his hand out and put her hair behind her ear. "You told me once, long time ago," he said. Heather looked at him, her head slightly tilted to one side. "And you remembered?" she asked, sounding surprised. "Yes, why do you sound so surprised?" he asked, his fingers playing with her golden light brown hair. "Well I'm just surprised that you actually remembered." she answered, looking around the room again. Shane kissed her cheek softly, and took her hand. "Come," he said, and she followed him over to where he'd laid out a blanket and everything was just perfect. Like something you'd only see in a movie. They sat side by side eating their dinner and talking. "Dance with me, Heather." Shane stood up, and held his hand out to her. "But we don't have any music," she looked up at him. He disappeared for a second, and came back holding a little CD player. "Now we do. Come, dance with me," he repeated and held his hand out to her. She smiled and took it. Shane pulled her close, and soon music filled the arbour. "Two very different people, too scared to get along. Till two hearts beat together, underneath one sun. One very special moment, can turn a destiny. And what some would say could never change, has changed for you and me." Heather closed her eyes, and let the song gently wrap itself around them. "It's beautiful Shane, what's it called?" she asked. "It's called 'We Are One'. Specially made for one beautiful girl," he said, and she smiled. "Lucky girl. The song is really beautiful. Who sings it?" Shane closed his eyes, and held her closer. "I do," he answered. "'Cause it's all, it's all in the way you look through your eyes. And when all is said and done, all of the fear and all of the lies are not hard to overcome. It's all in the way you look at it that makes you strong. We were two, now we are one." She opened her eyes and looked at him. "You? I don't" He placed one finger over her lips, and smiled. "Ssssh listen." he whispered. "We are two very different people, so much to overcome. So why care for one another, when there's so much to be done? 'Cause sometimes it's necessary, just look how far we've come. You could say my friend that it's the end, or a new tale has begun." "Do you hear it?" he asked, and she shook her head. "Well, what am I listening for?" she asked. "You and me. The song's for you, Heather." he said. "For me?" she whispered with tears glittering in her eyes. "'Cause it's all, it's all in the way you look through your eyes. And when all is said and done, all of the fear and all of the lies are not hard to overcome. It's all in the way you look at it that makes you strong. We were two, now we are one." "And one moment in time, is all the time we need. Just to make a difference, to make it better for you and me. If you just believe." Shane sang softly in her ear, and chills ran down her back. He could feel her trembling and looked at her. She smiled at him, and looked down. Shane lifted her chin and looked into her eyes. "We are one," he said, and gently placed his lips on hers. |
