Part 29 (derek)
We both walked into the kitchen and I made us both a cup of coffee. "Sorry, I didn't realise how upset she would get." Sam said, quietly.
"I know, I should've explained." I said, and sat down. "What happened at that park today? She totally lost it!" "Umm, well, ok, you know that their mother died nearly a year ago." She nodded, "your ex?" "Yeah."  "Car accident, yeah?" I nodded. "It happened at that park, that road, Jess was there." "Oh God, poor kid.if I'd known..." "It's ok, I should've told you." We looked out at the kids, Jess had fallen asleep and Dylan was watching the video, laughing occassionally. "They seem ok now." She looked back at me. "I'm so sorry. I'll put Jess upstairs if she's asleep." "Yeah, ok. Thanks." We both walked out, Sam took Jess and put her upstairs.

(5 days later)
The rest of the week passed quite quickly, Sam and the kids weren't the best of friends, but could be in the same house together. The last morning, Bryan and Robyn were coming to pick them up that day, we were in the kitchen eating breakfast. The puppy started choking and making funny noises, then, threw up on Sam's favourite shoes she had left under the table. "Oh no!" Sam shouted, and ran over, a liitle bit too late. "Dylan, how many times have I told you not to feed that puppy your breakfast!" He just sat there. All of a sudden she grabbed his arm, pulling him off his chair. "Ow!" He cried out, she let go of his arm, it had a big red mark where she had grabbed him. "Sam, leave him alone!" I cried and ran over, he was now crying.
"Go to your room!" She yelled, he ran upstairs. Jess sat watching the whole thing in silence. "Sam, don't you ever touch him again!" I said, angrily, "he's just a kid." "Ok, ok. He needed it though, you guys are too slack with those kids, they run wild." She said, quietly. "Look, just shut up. Those kids are fine the way they are. You don't touch either of them." "Yeah, Daddy doesn't hit us. He just shouts. I'm going to tell him what you did." Jess said, quietly, but bravely I thought. "Jess, don't tell him, ok?" I whispered. She looked unsure. "She hurt him!" "She didn't mean to, it was just because the puppy was sick." "She's mean!" She shouted. "You can go to your room too Jess! And just stay out of my way until your dad comes for you." Sam shouted, walking towards jess, who looked as though she wished she'd kept her mouth shut. "Look, get away from her." I shouted, Jess ran upstairs too. Me and Sam sat in silence for a few minutes. How could she be so nice when it was just us two, but so mean when it came to the kids? I walked slowly upstairs to see Dyl and Jess, both sitting upset, but not crying, on their beds. "You guys ok?" "I want to go home, now!" Jess cried. "When's Daddy coming?" "Soon." Just then there was a knock at the front door, Sam must've opened it, because a few minutes later I heard Bryan and Robyn downstairs talking.
"Daddy!" Dylan cried, and ran downstairs, closely followed by Jess. "Hey monsters!" He laughed, picking Dyl up. "Been good?" "Yeah." I said, and looked over at Sam who just rolled her eyes. "What happened to your arm Dyl?" Robyn asked, walking over. It was still red, and starting to bruise a little, she felt it. "This is roasting hot. What happened?" Jess looked at Sam. "She hit him." "She what?!" Robyn shouted, Dylan nodded. Next thing, Robyn flew at Sam. "You cow! How dare you?!" "Oh be quiet." Sam pushed Robyn away, she fell down onto the couch. "Hey! You ever touch any of them again, I swear I'll-" bryan yelled, then  helped Robyn to stand up. "Would you guys calm down!" I yelled. "If you think you're getting those kids now, you are so wrong!" "Can we just talk?" I yelled again. "Touch them again," Bryan looked at both of us, "and we'll be talking through lawyers. Come on you two." He turned to leave. The kids and Robyn followed him out. "Bye guys." I followed them to the door. "I'll call you later Bryan, get this sorted." "Yeah, I guess." He was still angry, it broke my heart when the kids didn't even say goodbye as they left.
