| Part 28 (Sam) The kids had finally gone to sleep and I sat with Derek watching some documentary. "Sam, I've got a management meeting all day tomorrow, will you be ok with the kids?" I froze. "All day?" "Yeah, sorry hun." "It's ok, I'll take them to the park if it's dry." "Umm, that'd be good, but don't take them to the one on Newton Road, take them to the other one." "The other one? It's way across town, what's wrong with Newton Road?" I asked. "Jess doesn't like it there." "A park's a park Derek." "I know, but, just try not take them there, please?" I couldn't refuse the begging look. "Ok then." I sighed. "I better go up to bed, busy day tomorrow." I smiled a little. "Thanks for this Sam." "It's ok, I know it's tough. Coming upstairs?" "No, I want to finish watching this, it's really interesting." "Ok then, night." I went to bed, tomorrow was going to be tough. I woke up early the next morning, and sleepily wandered downstairs. Derek was already in the kitchen doing breakfast. "Morning Sam." He said, cheerily. "Morning. Hi kids, sleep ok?" They nodded. "How bout we go out later, while Derek's at his meeting? The park sound ok?" "Yeah." They both cried. "Ok, well, eat your breakfast, instead of feeding it to the puppy Dylan." "Ok."he said, quietly. Derek left after a while, leaving us 3 alone. After watching some tv (i now detest Teletubbies), we decided to go to the park. I didn't see how Newton Road park could be so bad, it was only a park, so I decided to go there. We got to the gates, and Dylan ran inside. "Jess?" She was standing at the gate, stairing through to the road on the other side. "Come on, it's only a park." "I'm not going in there!" She was terrified. "Jess, come on, now!" She still refused to move. "Jess Mc Fadden, you get in here, now!" I lost my temper, it was stupid, it was only a park. She started to scream, I couldn't make out what she was crying about. Something about cars. "The cars aren't in the park, now come on!" "Jess? Are you ok?" Dylan walked over, hearing her scream, and looked towards the road. "What are we going to do?" I asked him, I had no experience with screaming kids. "Maybe we should call Uncle Derek." He suggested. "He's busy." "She's really upset Sam, mayeb we should take her home." "Yeah. Jess come on." She refused to move. "I'll carry you if I have to." I picked her up, and walked towardss the car, she was still screaming. We got back home, she had calmed down but was still clearly upset. Derek was already home when we got back. "Hey, how was it today?"then he saw Jess. "What happened?" "Jess got upset at the park." I explained, he looked at her, she was shaking. "You ok?" He asked her. She ran over to him and started crying again. "Got upset?! She's a nervous wreck! Sam , tell me what park." He looked annoyed. "Ok, that one on Newton Road. A park's a park. What's so bad about that one?" "Because," he sighed heavily, "look, I'll tell you later,ok?" I think we should get Jess calmed down first, don't you think?" I nodded. He picked Jess up. "Hey, it's ok." "What are we going to do?" I asked him, I had never seen anyone so upset, especially not a 4 year old. "I think we should go and see Daddy," Dylan said, Jess looked up. "Or Robyn." "Yeah, but Daddy's in the hospital Dyl, maybe Robyn's at home...." "You could phone her." I offered. "Yeah, I guess. You want to call Robyn?" I asked Dylan, who nodded. "Ok, you know the number?" He nodded again. "Ok, on you go, bring the phone in here." He ran out and grabbed the phone and carefully dialled the number. "Hello, Robyn? Yeah, it's me. Uncle Derek said I could phone. I'm ok, but Jess is really upset. That was why I wanted to phone." Jess watched him. "Hold on, I'll see." He looked up at Derek. "Robyn wants to talk to you." He handed Derek the phone, who was still holding Jess. "Yeah, it's me. Well, I'm not sure exactly what happened. She seems to have calmed down a little bit now. No, no, you don't have to pick them up now, they're fine here. Honestly, they'll be fine here, only 5 more days. How's Bryan? That's good, and you? Yeah, I know. You wanna talk to Jess?" He handed the phone to Jess. "Hi, uh-huh.yeah." Jess spoke to Robyn and calmed down, after hanging up the phone, she climbed down from Derek, and put the phone away. "Bit better Jess?" Derek asked. She nodded, then yawned a little. "Tired?" She shook her head. "Go on upstairs and bring your blanket down, we'll watch a video, ok?" Her and Dylan disappeared upstairs and reappeared a few minutes later with the blanket and a Disney video. Derek set up the video for them and left them on the sofa watching it. |
