christmas party #2

the little company that could had its christmas party tonight.

christmas has been pretty lean there in past years. last year there was no bonus, no extra time off and the annual party was held at the ceo's house with appetizers and soda. hey big spender indeed.

the veterans among us weren't expecting much this year, although we were somewhat surprised the event would be held at a local hotel, and a nice one at that. once we arrived, we were once again surprised with the quality of the food. no mere crudit�s and crackers for appetizers. no, indeed. there were stuffed mushrooms and baked brie and bacon wrapped scallops and crab cakes and a wonderful citrus punch and all the beer and wine you could drink.

dinner was excellent as well: a fruit ambrosia to die for, bibb lettuce salad with raspberry vinaigrette and baby shrimp, several pasta dishes and a few rice dishes [all of which i skipped], a chunky potato salad [skipped that too] and then baked salmon and a rare roast beef [i went for the fish]. the dessert table was dominated by an enormous buche de noel and a variety of heavenly and decadent chocolate confections, cheesecake bites and upscale cookies. they even brought fresh pots of coffee to each table after the dinner plates had been cleared.

we were fat and happy but the festivities weren't over yet. we had the ubiquitous and seemingly neverending white elephant gift exchange [i ended up with videos of it's a wonderful life and miracle on 34th street]. we had the annual trivia contest [i came in second and received a roadside emergency kit complete with jumper cables, something i have done without for far too long]. then just as we were thinking it was time to leave, the ceo told us we all were to get one more present. i thought maybe cash, a coworker thought tshirts but we were both wrong. wrong wrong wrong wrong.
