1999 november 01halloween recapin spite of finding the whole holiday not to my liking, gene and i had a very nice halloween. we had the pumpkins lit up on the back porch, as well as a purple bat luminaria thing that cast the most excellent shadows on the wall. we didn't have too many trick or treaters, which is odd considering how many children are in the neighbourhood, but that didn't bother me one little bit as it means i get to eat the leftover single pack oreos and bit-o-honey candies. gene grabbed halloween h20 from the video store as neither of us had seen it. we had a great time yelling at the characters not to go into rooms and not to walk down hallways and not to do this that or the other, and when they didn't follow our advice, we declared to each other sadly and meaningfully, "well, they're dead." there was no dressing up in our world. i've always hated dressing up. people were and are still surprised that i dislike it. apparently most shy children revel in becoming something else, hiding so it were. for me it was always the opposite. if i dressed up, more people looked at me than ever before, and not only did they look, they wanted to talk. "how darling she is! aren't you happy to be out looking so darling?" "look howard, isn't she just the cutest little princess ever. what's your name little princess?" the attention was unbearable, as was the having to beg for treats, which involved not only talking to people, something that still strikes terror into my very shy soul, but having to ask for something which goes against my very stubborn and independent nature. no amount of candy could make the torture worthwhile.
tricking myself that the leftover treats i'm eating aren't bad for me, claire
