the monster behind the door

so, we did in fact go see the blair witch project last night.

i thought it was peachy keen coolorama. and so did gene.

surprisingly enough, i did not get sick at all. i had heard horror stories about the jittery camera work and how it was making hordes of people leave the theater to go relieve their stomachs of popcorn and other contents. i am notorious for getting queasy just looking at a moving car and if you put me in the backseat of one i am a goner in fifteen minutes or less, so you can imagine what i was expecting. i did take half a dramamine, but i think even without it i would have been fine. i didn't find it nearly as unfocused and jiggly as i thought it might be, or it may just be i have watched enough poorly filmed home videos that i am used to it by now.

anyhow, i have no real complaints with the people who disliked the movie for the camerawork; to each his own. i do, however, have a problem with the people who thought it wasn't scary enough, and more particularly, those who thought never seeing the monster/witch made the whole thing a let down. nothing the film makers could have come up with to show me at the end could possibly have lived up to the amorphous scary thing i had going in my head. i don't like it when i am shown the monster in most cases, it is always a let down for me. i think i have too much imagination.

the blair witch project, and movies like it, those with undefined monsters and a lot of atmosphere, are movies for people with an extremely vivid imagination. i suppose on one hand it is a bit of a cop out for the guys making the movie to require we provide our own mental monsters and such, but on the other hand, i view it as film making for the extremely intelligent.

did i mention my iq is 164?

a small break in the action
