1999 may 25crunchy in the morning
i am developing a taste for expensive breakfast cereals.
this is not a good thing as gene and i are trying to cut down on our frivolous expenditures and $4.50 breakfast cereal is the definition of frivolous. but i do so love the stuff. i managed enough restraint to only buy two of the three or four varieties available, but i know next time i hit the grocery, the other flavours will be in the shopping cart. when we were children, we ate cheerios. i hated them. the only time of year i could deal with them was christmas when my mother would mix them with melted marshmallows and green food colouring to make little christmas tree treats; don't tell me she didn't pick up american kitsch in record time. if we were due a special treat, we were sometimes allowed to pick out a box of sugared cereal. we took turns choosing the type as the four of us could never agree on anything, especially something as important as cereal and its attendant prize. it goes without saying that whoever picked out the cereal got the prize, which led to much angst when making one's decision. i might have loved count chocula above all others, but frosted flakes may have had a better prize. luckily, freakies arrived on the scene: more sugar than you could shake a stick at and a great little rubber monster prize. i wish i'd saved them all as i can barely remember what they looked like. in any event, there is no prize in the country inn specialties cereals. unless you count mini palmiers with dried cranberries, or mini waffle crisps with dried cherries as prizes. this morning, as i am crunching them up, i would have to count all of them. yummy.
well, not completely different as it ties in to the cereal eating. since i eat more cereal these days, we buy more milk and as we tired of going to the store for it so often, we graduated to the gallon jugs. an unforeseen side benefit of these jugs is the free cat toy that accompanies each one. i'm talking about the milk rings. peter parker goes absolutely mad for the things. he will bat one all over the kitchen, out through the dining room, into the living room and ultimately, under a chair. he then darts in and out of said chair underside, killing the ring over and over and over again. sometimes he will casually saunter away, as if he is done, only to turn around and run back at top speed, hoping to catch one in the act of escape. there were six of them under the chair when i vacuumed this weekend. little black idiot. but they are cheaper than catnip mice. crunchily, claire
