1999 may 07tonic
i'm in the middle of tonic water mania.
i tend toward the obsessive with my food and drink habits: i find something i like and i have it over and over and over again until i am so sick of the sight of it, much less the taste, i don't have it again for years. i finally weaned myself off the cocacola late last year and was immersed in gallons of crystal light for most of this winter. two weeks ago, while idly walking up and down the aisles at the grocery, my eyes fell upon the tonic water. "hmm," thought i, "it's been years. i wonder how long quinine stays in your system. maybe i should drink some just in case a rare and virulent strain of malaria is on its way to my house." better safe than sorry, i bought 2 liters. and then 2 more liters, and 2 more and 2 more and you get the picture. i actually like this generic version somewhat less than canada dry, and considerably less than schweppes, but it's cheap. and i'm drinking the diet version since they have to add about a ton of sugar to the regular kind to counteract the bitterness of the quinine. i just don't need all those extra calories when i have been so good this year. i love the bitterness , but even more, i love how fizzy it is. it has got to be the fizziest of any drink i have ever quaffed, but i have no idea why. this guy spent the better part of an entry talking about carbonation, but neglected to give me a scientific reason why tonic water is about a zillion times more carbonated than your average cocacola. if anybody knows the answer, drop me a line.
i woke up this morning and the house still smelled of garlic. i found this recipe on the web, and made my own version last night: fusilli instead of rigatoni, spinach instead of escarole, mushrooms instead of onions, threw in some pork for gene, the carnivore in this partnership. it was wonderful. we've been so busy of late that we have been creatively snacking for most meals. i forget how much i love to cook and how nice it is to have a sit down meal. i must make an effort to do this dinner thing more often.
floating on the fizzy bubbles of a finally friday, claire
