1999 april 14dirty little secret
i am developing a rather embarrassing addiction.
i am not one of those who condemns all of television as evil pap, nor am i of the school that television is the best invention since sliced bread. i like it well enough, have an annoying habit of turning the thing on as soon as i get up and as soon as i get home from work, but not really watching it; it is a leftover from living on my own. i liked the sound and motion over in the corner and would have it on even when listening to music. i'm good at the multitasking stuff. anyhow, there are few shows i watch regularly -- 60 minutes and the simpsons on sundays and the xfiles if i feel like staying up for it, xena when i am home, homicide if nothing better is happening on a friday night, saturday morning cartoons -- and i rarely read a tvguide or schedule of any sort. i do surf though and several weeks ago i stopped on the scifi channel. it wasn't the classic star trek i was expecting but rather highlander. i've been hooked ever since. i can't decide exactly why. it's not a physical attraction thing; i mean he's handsome enough but he's not really the sort to make me swoon and i have an urge to take him to the barber. i think at first it was sort of an anticipatory thing, i wanted to see him cut somebody's head off. so, of course, for the first three weeks or so i didn't see him do much more than brawl and play kissyface. my patience was eventually rewarded, however, with six straight episodes in which he relieved another immortal of their noggin. i do so like all the fireworks and electricity, lightning and things blowing up that happen with the quickening. now i find it fills a niche in my life, the same one 90210 used to fill: i like a show i can yell at. i find it amazingly satisfying to call duncan a slut when he is acting like one, to scream "idiot" at richie when he wants to trust people he just met, to shout "weasel" at john when i am not quite sure whether he is duncan's friend or enemy. sure, it's juvenile, but it's cheaper than therapy. a few years short of immortal, claire |
