digestive biscuits

i am so easily pleased.

one of my coworkers went to canada to meet with a client last week and, as requested, brought me back some digestive biscuits. he is such an angel that he not only brought !two! rolls of them, he also brought a bonus sized package of rich tea biscuits. i am in cookie heaven; when i was in australia, i would have said bikkie heaven. either way, i am doing the dance of successive joys as i nibble the edges of a mcvitie's, made in england, packaged for canada, digestive biscuit.

the packaging is important. i do so love the canadian habit of both english and french on most food labels. it makes everything seem twice as exotic somehow. it was one of the things i loved about capetown as well, seeing things in both english and afrikaans.

in general, i live a very mundane life. i wake up, go to work, come home, kiss my boyfriend, feed the cat, eat dinner, watch tv or play on the computer, go to bed, sleep. lather, rinse, repeat. to counter the daily routine, i try to surround myself with reminders of the more exciting things i have done or will do or want to do. whenever i visit another country, one of my essential stops is the local grocery. there is nothing like coming home to a tube of susser-senf [sweet mustard] in the refrigerator, a bar of fry's turkish delight in the cupboard, a pinch of saffron in the spice cabinet and a pan of peri-peri soup simmering on the stove.

i may have a mundane american life at the moment, but my kitchen is an international delight.
