geeks

actual conversation held in the tool section of sears:

me: i love fiddly little tools. you just can't have too many allen wrenches.
she: i don't have any, i just call my dad if i need something fixed.
me: ooooooo! lookee! this screwdriver lights up when you squeeze the handle!
she: how stupid. who is going to want to screw in the dark.

i don't suppose you will find it surprising that she was a 28 year old virgin on the day she married. i certainly hope the man knows his tools.

in other news, i am putting a lot of pressure on myself to have this site up and pretty by halloween. even though i am writing daily entires for you, you won't know about them until i send the mass mailing on saturday. you will all miss at least three different incarnations of claire's world; version 0.4 should be online tomorrow and with a little luck it will graduate to 1.0 and live a happy and fruitful life until such time as i grow bored with it and redesign.

i have stubbornly refused to study html until now but i may break down and get a book or two one day soon. i have an opportunity to do some webmastering and while i have been able to juryrig any number of personal pages, it might be nice if i actually had a clue what i was doing if i am going to get paid for it.

i've fought becoming a fullfledged geek for no real reason other than the years it took me to shed the "smart girl" rep from high school. i think i'm afraid it will settle itself around my shoulders like a shroud again if i excel at anything computer related, but the cash and the perks of most geek related jobs are singing a sweet siren's song to me of late.

"claire! claire! come to the geek side, claire! it's not like you'd be a real programmer, it's just html, a little java here and there and what's java? it's coffee for god's sake."

i never said my sirens had a clue.

to geek or not to geek, that is the question, claire
