Jesus Feeds Five Thousand
Matthew 14: 15-19 New Living Translation

That evening the disciples came to him and said, "This is a desolate place, and it is getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves."
But Jesus replied, "That isn't necessary--you feed them."
"Impossible!" they exclaimed. "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish!"
"Bring them here," he said. Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. And he took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and asked God's blessing on the food. Breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave some of the bread and fish to each disciple, and the disciples gave them to the people.

The story from the Gospel of Matthew tells how Jesus fed 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. Augsburg College is one of six colleges in the United States who participates in the Campus Kitchens program, through this program we take the extra food from Augsburg and area stores and distribute it throughout the community. Augsburg College is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and as part of Augsburg’s signature core curriculum, first year students are required to take Religion 100, Christian Vocation and the Search for Meaning.

In Christian Vocation and the Search for Meaning we have studied various books of Bible, both from the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament. In the New Testament we learned about Jesus and his teachings about loving everyone as your neighbor, the Golden Rule. We have also learned that our vocation should be something that we love to do and that fulfills us. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a man who contemplated and lived out his faith in Nazi Germany by trying to make life better for all Germans is also someone we have studied.

Throughout our time working at Campus Kitchens we have made friends and bought joy to many people’s lives. Food is necessary for all human life and by following the Golden Rule, Campus Kitchens has allowed us to make life better for people in the community. Campus Kitchens can also be a way for Augsburg’s students to continue their faith by doing the work of the Lord. Campus Kitchens allows students to apply their faith in the world, especially since college is a time the tests one faith. Some people can also use Campus Kitchens as a way to still be active in their faith if going to mass does not fulfill them.

Augsburg College has given students the opportunity to participate in religious doings through curriculum classes and extra-curricular activities like Campus Kitchens. In all, if you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life or in your own faith, Campus Kitchens would be a beneficial choice.
