Client News (September 27, 2008 ):

NBA REFEREE'S HARDCOVER CHRONICLE OF UNDERCOVER LIFE JOINS THE BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

Bob Delaney's COVERT Becomes Part of the Hall of Fame's Joseph M. O'Brien Historical Resource Center Archives

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. September 26, 2008 The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to announce it has received a copy of NBA Referee Bob Delaney's book Covert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob for its archives. Covert, written with Dave Scheiber of the St. Petersburg Times and published by Union Square Press / Sterling Publishing was released in February of 2008 and is scheduled to be available in paperback in the Spring of 2009.

The book accounts Delaney's Garden State upbringing as the son of a New Jersey State Trooper and as a basketball standout at Jersey State College before becoming a state trooper himself at age twenty-one. Soon after, Delaney was recruited to go undercover in an unprecedented joint venture with the New Jersey State Police and the FBI to infiltrate the Mafia's control and influence of the Northern Jersey waterfront. For this secret mission, Delaney had to take on a new identity and for an authentic cover, had to turn his back on his loved ones and the fraternity that he most enjoyed being a part of, his fellow troopers. The 2 year investigation, which was originally planned to last only six months resulted in over 30 arrests of prominent mob figures.

The undercover experience took a serious physical and mental toll on Delaney who suffered bouts with Stockholm Syndrome and post-traumatic stress. As Delaney struggled to find his new identity following his convincing life as a mobster, he returned to the sport of basketball, which proved to be both therapeutic and cathartic, first becoming a high school referee and is now one of the most respected veterans of the NBA with over two decades of officiating at the sports highest level.

"I am honored to have my book, Covert, in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame library," expressed Bob Delaney. "My story, like so many of my fellow NBA referees and basketball officials of all levels, is one that was born after playing days ended. Becoming a referee was the avenue available and that road has provided an exciting ride. I share with folks that when you experience tough times, follow your passion. For me, that was basketball officiating. The calm and peace I felt on a high school basketball floor helped me through my emotional rollercoaster ride after surfacing from working undercover. I never planned on it, but that passion opened the door for my NBA career and having my story included in the Hall of Fame is humbling."

New Deal Announcement (September 22, 2008 ):

Client News (August 14, 2008 ):

Jeff Johnson hosts new show on BET.

BET starts a weekly news program on Friday described as a cross between Keith Olbermann and Bill Maher with a black perspective.

Called "The Truth with Jeff Johnson" and airing at 11 p.m. on Fridays, the program stars a BET personality who has also been an activist for the NAACP and People for the American Way. Its debut is timed for the Democratic National Convention.

Besides election coverage and commentary on the week's news, Johnson said he wanted "The Truth" to address topics like the use of vouchers for private schools and health issues particularly relevant to African Americans.

BET has been criticized frequently in the black community for cutting back on news-oriented shows. But Johnson said much of the criticism comes from people who don't watch BET, and don't see how news has been incorporated into existing shows. BET was one of the few networks to cover Darfur in depth, he said.

"I have been encouraged by the direction we've been going in," he said.

On the four nights of the Democratic convention, BET will run news specials focusing on how ex-convicts can't vote, on the top 10 issues facing black Americans, on the key moments leading up to Obama's nomination and on whether Obama could be considered a manifestation of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

While TV One is carrying live convention coverage for four nights and an "afterparty" of social commentary, BET's only live coverage will be of Obama's speech. BET's reporters will deliver convention stories inserted into other programs, Johnson said.

This week, Bob Delaney's and Dave Scheiber's book COVERT received a high honor: a STARRED review in Publishers Weekly (week of October 10, 2007): Here is the review:

-- Publishers Weekly, 10/15/2007 Covert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob Bob Delaney with Dave Scheiber, foreword by Bill Walton. Sterling/Union Square, $19.95 (256p) ISBN 978-1-4027-5443-2 NBA referee Delaneys fascinating account of his prior life as a New Jersey state trooper who infiltrated organized crime will be a must-read for those drawn to Joe Pistones similar account in Donnie Brasco (or the movie adaptation starring Johnny Depp). In 1975, Delaney was a relative novice in law enforcement when he was tapped by a superior to help build cases against major Mafia families by creating and running a fake business, Alamo Trucking. With the aid of St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times sportswriter Scheiber, Delaney captures perfectly the daily routine and perils of undercover work, and describes the psychological challenges he faced during the three years of Project Alpha: The granite foundation of my self-image... had given way to shifting sands of doubt and worry. While less heralded than Pistones work, Delaneys achievementswhich yielded multiple convictions of members of the Bruno and Genovese familieswere significant precursors to the Feds massive 1980s assault on La Cosa Nostra. Becoming a basketball referee after these proceedings was a return to an early passion of the high school all-state forward and captain of his college teambut the fear, he says, still comes back sometimes. 8 pages of b&w photos. Congrats, Bob and Dave!
