UNION VETERANS COLOR GUARD (page 2)
Historical Note: The music you heard is "Garryowen". Its most recognized as the official song of General (actually LtCol) George Custers 7th Cavalry which was organized AFTER the Civil War in 1866.  Legend has it, Genl Custer adopted the song after hearing some of his Irish-born troops singing it.  Other stories say his brother introduced the song to the 7th Cavalry.
HOWEVER, I (Steve) have a different theory. "Garryowen" was a  popular CW song (in fact,it goes back to our Revolution and earlier) among Irish soldiers both North and South. DURING the Civil War it was pretty much the official marching song of the 69th New York of the famed Irish Brigade..
General Custer was well noted during his lifetime as a daring Civil War cavalry officer and served in these same campaigns as the 69th NY---> the Penninsula Campaign, Antietam, Chancelorsville, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg & Appomattox. I'm betting he heard it many times  played by the 69th's band during the CW.
I'm also betting his brother Cpt Thomas Custer also heard it many times during the war. Tom also served in many of  the same campaigns as the 69th NY,  including Petersburg, Saylors Creek & Appomattox, so he probably heard the 69ths band play the song. Interestingly, Tom Custer was more famous then George at that time. You see, Tom was the recepient of TWO  MEDAL OF HONORS during the Civil War. (Are you beginning to see the tie in?) He was the only man to achieve that during the war. In fact, both citations were for capturing not one, but a total of THREE stands of colors from the enemy.
So, after the Civil War, Tom joins his brother George in the newly formed 7th Cavalry and shortly thereafter "Garryowen" becomes the official  song of the regiment . Ten years later, George and Tom Custer and 231 men of Companies C, E, F, I, & L hear the song played for the last time by the regiments band  on June 22, 1876.  Three days later, they are  all killed fighting the Sioux & Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in Montana.
Today, the song is still the official song of the

Left: Probably the most famous Color Guard in the Union Army-the famed 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regt. Here in July 1863 in MS, the Color Guard includes the Regimental Mascot-a Bald Eagle named "Old Abe".
"Old Abe" traveled 14,000 miles with his regiment.  He survived 37 battles by clinging to the ground with his soldiers or by flying high above the action. His men said he would then return to his mount screaming the Battle Cry of Freedom.  Rebel sharpshooters were ordered by Gen Stirling Price @ the Battle of Corinth, MS  to shoot him out of the sky, but to no avail. He lived untill 1883. His legend lives on the patch of the US Armys famous 101st Air Assault Division

They did a great job interpreting "Casey's Regulations" and using some photos of us. Heck, understanding 140 year old regs is hard enough for us let alone for Danish reenactors.
