The Age of Discovery Designer Diary is now available!

Design Diary - Middle Ages

By Ed Beach, BreakAway Games
and Michael Fetterman, Firaxis Games

Sid Meier's Civilization III: Conquests, Firaxis's second expansion pack for the mega-hit Civilization III, features nine professionally created scenarios that introduce concepts never before seen in any Civilization title. The fifth designer diary in this series provides a glimpse at the design process and decisions made during the development of the Age of Discovery conquest. This conquest was designed by Ed Beach, a Producer at Breakaway Games

scenario opens in 1490, just prior to Columbus' discovery of the New World. This Age of Discovery conquest recognizes numerous key events of this period, including

The Navigation School is a small wonder that boosts ship movement by 2 and creates an Explorer every 10 turns

Dias' Voyage (great wonder) gives the Portuguese a Golden Age to start the scenario, boosts ship movement by 1, and produces a Colonist every 8 turns

Spanish Conquistador & Caravels start ready to sail west to the New World.

Luthers' Theses is a great wonder that provides two happy faces across a continent.

Magellan's Voyage is a great wonder that boosts shield production in the city and creates a Frigate every 5 turns

Aztec, Inca, Maya and Iroquois nations are ready to battle European aggression

Jesuit Colleges are a city improvement that increase scientific output and create a Missionary every 5 turns

The English unique unit is the Elizabethan Sea Dog, a speedy naval unit with enslavement capability.

Frigates and Man-O-War are available in the latter portions of the tech tree.

Profiles for the Hittite and Incan races are now available!

CIV-III-3 CONQUESTS (C3C) introduces seven new civilizations each with unique units

The Profile of Hittites

Leader :  Mursilis

In Civilization III: Conquests, the Hittites are considered a expansionist and commercial civilization. They start the game with Pottery and the Alphabet, and build the Three-Man Chariot instead of the Standard Chariot.

Hittite Three-Man Chariots take the place of normal chariots. They move quickly and will withdraw from combat if they are losing (unless fighting another fast unit). Like other chariot units, they are wheeled and may not enter Mountains, Volcano, Jungle or Marsh terrain unless following a road. A Hittite city must have Horses in its Strategic Resources box to build a three-man chariot.

  Att. Def. Moves Shield Cost

In Civilization III: Conquests, the Incans are considered to be an expansionist and agricultural civilization. They start the game with Pottery and Masonry. They also begin the game with a regular Scout and may build their unique Chasqui Scout units thereafter.

The Incan Chasqui Scout is a scout unit that replaces the basic scout for the Inca. He has a modest attack and defensive capability. He is also very fast and ignores movement costs for both hills and mountains.

  Att. Def. Moves Shield Cost
Standard Scout 0 0 2 10
Chasqui Scout 1 1 2 20
