Examiner News Report

On Monday June 2 the Launceston City Council approved the development of a cinema on the Inveresk Rail Yard site.

Aldermen voted 7 -4 for the project despite the strong representations against the development in it's current form.

A well thought out and prepared professional presentation by the representors was put to the Council's Development Review Committee, the week prior .

Before the representors on the Metro Multiplex even had time to consider their appeal options, yet another development application was received for the site adjacent  to the cinema.

This time hotel operator
QUEST wants to build residential and tourist apartments on this public land.See above for the architects drawing of the  proposed development.

The architects
ARTAS have been involved in many of the prestige developments of Launceston including the Transit Centre, the Old Launceston Seaport and other building work on the railyard site including the  Academy of Arts and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

This is not a new proposal, the Better Cities Urban Renewal Project  always intended to have a residential component, and a hotel complex was approved following the failure of the Kings Park Hotel.

City of Launceston Online however does have reservations for this project as it is  in the shadow of the cinema and
will very likely impact on the heritage values of the area, particularly the nearby historic gas works.

You are welcome to leave your comments about the $10 million dollar hotel project in the guestbook on this page.
