"Riddle is 'devinette' in French, from the verb 'deviner' - usually translated as 'guess', but it is not random guessing (though it can mean that); it usually means 'work it out'. It came from Latin 'divinare' which was connected with the word for 'a god' and meant 'to fortell the future'. In English we used to use the verb 'divine', but it kept the Latin overtones of finding out by magic or divine inspiration rather than logically. The French have always been more attached to logic than the English." - PJ
