Driving through the night they got to Salt lake city in the early morning. By the time they had gotten there, the girls decided it would be best to stop somewhere to get a few hours of shut eye. Halfway through the night, Jack had earned the honor of having the duct tape removed from his mouth, but was reminded that it would go back any time the girls were sick of his so called "wit".
"Anything you say girls." Jack said.
Jack sat at the curb of the hotel they were staying at, a far nicer place they had gotten since the rat trap in Vegas, with Livvie. The other girls were in the main office paying for their rooms.
"How are you?" Jack asked her. Livvie raised an eyebrow at her. "I'm not trying to get fresh with you. I'm actually curious to your welfare."
"Uh huh." Livvie noted suspiciously. "I'm all right."
"You don't seem it." Jack said. Livvie looked at him.
"What makes you say that?" Livvie asked.
"How is that possible? You would be older than all of us combined and yet you look younger than the girls." Jack said. Livvie stiffened at that. "Thats a compliment."
"So we have a lot in common, we're both new, and in places we don't expect." Jack said laying a hand on her. "What say we do that journey together." Livvie slapped Jack across the face. The move caught him completely off-guard. "I apologize." He said, but not exactly sounding too sorry. "I thought we were on an understanding level now."
"We aren't." Livvie said standing up. "We were never be on that level. You came so close to seeming like a normal human being but you blew that for me." Livvie said walkaing away. "Someone other than a relentless horn-dog, but thats never going to happen to you." She looked over her shoulder. "Come on. I think our rooms are ready."
Livvie walked into the office with Jack slowly following behind her.
"Where's our rooms?" Livvie said to Chea. The fierce glow in her eyes scared Chea for a minute.
"Over here." Chea said. "And good news! We got two rooms."
"Good." Livvie said almost feeling her teeth grind into her gums. "Two rooms? One for Jack and one for us."
"Actually one for me and Chea, and one for you and Jack." Karen said. "The rooms only have a bed and a sleeper bed."
"Ok that is not going to happen." Livvie said. "Not with this man." She said jabbing a thumb in Jacks general direction.
"Hey if you can control yourself, I can surely control myself." Jack said rubbing his face. A noticable palm print was on his cheek. Karen raised her eyebrow. What had gone on out there at the curb? From the way Livvie was looking at him she doubted they would know anytime soon.
"Fine. But he gets the sleeper cot. And I want that duct tape." Livvie said. "Just in case."
As Chea settled into their room, and fixed her sleeper cot, Karen called their manor home.
Brianna picked up the line. "Hello?"
"Its me Karen." Karen said. "We're in Salt lake city."
"Don't tell me, our new clone is a mormon and has five husbands to take with us?" Brianna cracked.
"Oh no, no sign of her yet." Karen said.
"I have a question, why didnt you call me to tell me you were sending a clone here?" Brianna asked.
"Oh gee, don't mind me, I'm used to being an afterthought." Brianna muttered.
"I'm sorry, we were leaving and it happened so fast." Karen said. "Where is Catfish?"
"Hes watching He-man right now." Brianna said. "I feel like I have a child of my own now. I just thank god I don't have to change diapers, I dont want to see some things on that man."
"Tell her not to give him a lot of sugar!" Chea called from her side of the room.
"Don't give him a lot of sugar." Karen repeated her friends message.
"Aw gee, then maybe I shouldn't have given him that Captain Crunch cereal." Brianna thought out loud.
"Just kidding." Brianna laughed. "See you later." She hung up the phone. "Okay, now I'm gonna have to get that box of Captain crunch away from him." She went to the "Pee Wees playhouse room". "Plus if hes going to stay awhile he should do a survey soon."
Jack finished putting the sheets on his bed. He sat on it while Livvie was absent mindedly reading a phone book.
"This book is three years out of date." Livvie muttered.
Jack got up and rubbed his hands together. "Look, a mini-bar fridge thing."
"They charge us double for eating or drinking that stuff." Livvie said. "So don't you dare."
"Relax, Livvie." Jack said her name for the first time. "I havent eaten anything all day, they can't charge that much for a small bag of Fritos." He said rooting through the fridge. "Tanqueray." He said. "And its half full."
"Wow, they don't keep track of their stock." Livvie said, not really caring.
"Its going out of date tomorrow. I think I will have a little swig." He said getting off the floor. Livvie got off the bed and took the bottle from him.
"You're a clone, we don't know how this will affect you." Livvie said moving to the little sink in the room. "Best we get rid of it."
"Why can't we have just a little taste?" Jack asked as he moved to the side of her. "Just a little bit won't hurt at all."
"Fine." Livvie said giving him the bottle. He took a small swallow of it it and smacked his lips. They waited for a second.
"See, I didn't spontaneously combust. Now you."
"I don't think so." Livvie said. "Spirits don't really cooperate with me." She said taking the bottle from him. She dumped a little down the sink. He put his hand on hers for a second. His face was really close to hers for a fraction of a second. Then he helped her dump the rest of it down the drain.
"You hesistated." Jack said. "Why?"
"I don't know." Livvie said moving away. "I'm going to the soda machine."
"I'll bet." Livvie muttered as she walked out the door.
