Places called Holland
A coast-to-coast drive on the American backroads
In the months October and November 1996, Dutch journalists
Anne Wesseling and Abram Donkers travelled through the United
States, searching for Dutch influences on the American society.
They found 28 places called
Holland.
Holland, Michigan
September, 1846. A group of Dutch emigrants,
led by Dr. Albertus C. Van Raalte, left Rotterdam aboard the ship
Southerner. The voyage took seven weeks and included a major storm
early in the journey, eventually they reached Michigan.
Zeeland
The
City of Zeeland, Michigan. Incorporated in 1907 and named after
the Province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, Zeeland
is located approximately 25 miles west of Grand

Buren

The original village of Harlem
was established in 1658 by Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant
and named Nieuw Harlem after the Dutch city of Harlem. - Historical

Flushing
In October, 1645, Governor William Kieft granted
a patent to establish the town of Vlissingen, today known as Flushing.
The Flushing patent granted for the first time, the right 'to
have and enjoy liberty of conscience, according to the custom

The "Groote River" was known by four different names, listed on
the map, and later became the Hudson River.
Harlingen
The City of Harlingen is located in the geographic
and population center of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Harlingen
is a rapidly growing city of over 52,300 and forms part of Cameron
County, one of Texas' fastest growing metropolitan statistical
areas.
Zwolle
The North Toledo Bend State Park is located on the shores of beautiful Toledo Bend reservoir near Zwolle, La and one of the largest manmade lakes United States.
Nederland
Nederland, Colorado.
Nederland,
Texas. Founded just before turn of the century by immigrants
from Holland. Early efforts at rice farming and dairying played
important role, but growth began in earnest with the discovery
of Spindletop oil field.
Bergen
Settled by the Dutch, Bergen
was created in 1683 as one of the four original counties in New
Jersey. Its early borders reached into what are now Passaic and
Hudson counties.
Middleburg
Most Virginia counties are named for English or Virginia personalities
or places. However, we have found some Dutch
connections. After the turn of the century, Middleburg,
Virginia began welcoming a new wave of visitors that descended
on the town for foxhunting and steeplechasing. Lancaster
County and the scenic Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

Haarlem

is a historic port on the West side of the Isle of Walcheren in
the Province of Zeeland (The Netherlands). Nowadays, usually many

Harlingen
About 70 B.C. the first people
lived in the Harlingen area, near to 1234 Harlingen receives the city charter.
Harlingen, because of the connection to the sea, was very important
for trading during the Golden Age.
The industries that made Harlingen prominent where, shipyards,
breweries, salt- seething, pottery and grain- and saw mills.
Zwolle
Unknown, unloved. This certainly applies to the Hanseatic City of Zwolle. But once you have visited Zwolle, you are completely sold to this old city. Zwolle is a city brimming with activity. Especially the medieval city centre is a tourist draw.
