Original black & white
'Fighting Dick' Richardson 1861
The famous Union General 'Fighting Dick' Richardson, a hero of the Civil War. Colouring of this image revealed details not seen on the original black & white, noticeably on the area around the sash tassles and sword. These areas were carefully enhanced in the coloured version to make it look as if they've always been visible in the image.
Another area of note in the coloured image is the background, this a 'set' built by the photographer and used outside. The pillar in the background is actually wooden, a close examination revealed the joins and nails used. No colour information was available for either the pillar or the curtains, the colours eventually selected were those that enhanced the overall image, giving more 'warmth' to the finished appearance
