The following article was compiled by Mane Ditton from information supplied by Mrs P Reid. Bald Mountain, and from a Newspaper Article "Reminiscences of Joseph Whitehead of Wallangarra" and was published in the “Wallangarra & Jennings Centenary 1888-1988” Book

Joseph Whitehead. a son of James Whitehead, was born in Dalby in 1865. With his family he moved to Stanthorpe when he was nine years of age. In August, 1885 he came to live in Wallangarra and, with the exception of a few months spent on railway work near Brisbane, was a resident in the district until the time of his demise.

In his reminiscences, Joseph said that the only other residents in Wallangarra prior to his settling here, that he could remember, were members of the James Long family who then camped near the creek on the Queensland side and Mr D O'Leary and family.

Joseph's first job at Wallangarra was making bricks with his father. The bricks were made from clay from the area known as "Stuckey's Gully". This is where the brickworks was situated. The exact position has not been verified, but the general opinion is that it's the area behind Mr and Mrs Jack Bryant's Callandoon Street residence. Later they made bricks for the extension of the Railway Station.

In 1886 he and his Father were making bricks for the Tenterfield Railway Station at "Welburns" on the South side of town. This was particularly remembered by Joseph as his 21st birthday took place then. At that time they also helped to make bricks at Styles Brickyards near and at the back of the old Convent off Miles Street. The railway line to Wallangarra had not then been started. Prior to this he had worked on the mining field at Boorook and following that, on the railway construction at "The Bluff". Bricks were being made at The Bluff for the culverts and other railway requirements. His job was assisting in the brick yards. The Hotel had been built at the foot of The Bluff and was kept by Mick O'Connor. John Ellis kept a store there and Harry Curry had a Butcher's Shop.

While Joseph was working at The Bluff a tragedy took place. One night a young Irishman was stabbed with a knife and died. It all arose out of a quarrel and fight by two lads. There was a dance on that night which came to a sudden end.

Joe married Mercy Severn Stuckey, a first day pupil in 1888 of the Wallangarra Provisional School. Their home was on the corner of Treverton and Callandoon Streets. It still stands today. Their family was:- Edwin, Elizabeth (Lizzie), Ralph, Jim, Dave, Mercy, Harold, Phyllis, Arthur, Ernie, Cora, Florrie and Bob.

Eddie became a Station Master working with the Queensland Railways. He married Grace Bietz and their home was near Roma.

Elizabeth married Fred Apelt, a Driver on the railways. They lived in Warwick and then in Wallangarra where they built a home on the corner of Short and Rayleigh Streets and later returned to Warwick.

Ralph married Flo Collins and lived in Wallangarra. He was a Carrier and Petrol Dealer.

Jim was a Stockman and made his home in Wallangarra also. He married Bella Cleeland.

Dave lived in Coromal and worked at the Wire Works at Port Kembla.

Mercy married a Railway worker, Ben Mansfield, and settled in Wallangarra.

Harold, a Baker, owned the Baker's Shop in the Border town for some years. He married Dorothy Miles.

Phyllis married Peter Reid and lives at Bald Mountain, via Wallangarra.

Arthur married Kathleen Ross. He worked in his brother's Bakery and now lives in Tenterfield.

Ernie was a Stockman and married Edna Cleeland and they made their home in Wallangarra.

Cora married Albert Mann and lives in Stanthorpe, and Florrie, who married Arthur Bremner, lives in Stanthorpe also.

Bob married Edna McAlister and made their home in Wallangarra. They lived on a property that was originally selected by Bob's Father, on the outskirts of town.

Joseph Whitehead lived to a great age and passed away in 1948. His wife Mercy, predeceased him by four years. Both were laid to rest in the Cemetery at Wallangarra.

In 1948 the following Obituary appeared in the The Warwick Daily News for Joseph

Obituary

Mr Joseph Whitehead

WALLANGARRA: One of the oldest pioneers of the Wallangarra district, Mr Joseph Whitehead, passed away at the Stanthorpe General Hospital on Wednesday, June 2, following a short illness.

The late Mr Whitehead came to Wallangarra in 1885, at the age of 22 years, before the railway line had been extended from  Stanthorpe. A bricklayer by trade, he was at first engaged here making bricks, his first bricks being used in the building of the Wallangarra railway station. Prior to coming to Wallangarra he was engaged in making bricks which were used in the building of the New South Wales railway line from Glen Innes to Tenterfield.

In 1888 he married Miss Mercy Stuckey, of Wallangarra, and decided to settle in Wallangarra. He followed the pursuits of builder, bricklayer and mixed farmer, and resided here up to the time of his death.

Of a quiet and retiring nature he had a wide circle of friends. His work was always first class and honest, and up to the time of his retirement some few years ago he was much sought after here. Many are the house brick chimneys and residences erected by his hand at Wallangarra and the surrounding districts.

His wife predeceased him three years ago. He leaves a grown up family of 13, eight sons and five daughters. They are Messrs Edward Whitehead (Laidley), Ralph James, Harold, Ernest, and Robert (Wallangarra), Arthur (Sunnyside), and David (Cronulla), and Mesdames F. Apelt (Warwick), A. Mann (Stanthorpe), and B. Mansfield, P. Reid and A. Bremner (Wallangarra), and a large number of grand-children. His funeral which was largely attended, moved to the Wallangarra Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, June 3, the Rev Lindsay, Stanthorpe, officiating.
