This project focuses on teaching people Hakka language through ballads and slang. We all know that multicultural learning is worthwhile. Today, Hakka culture is somewhat invisible in Taiwan society under the impact of time and circumstances, Hakka language is facing the danger of disappearing. We, as descendants of Hakka, take it as our responsibility to do something to preserve and continue Hakka language; even though we know it is not easy to do with a spoken dialect with no written words.

After repeated discussion, we decided to take advantage of what we have learned, the language skills, to teach both Hakka and non-Hakka people Hakka language. We adopted a few steps to accomplish the goal. First, we tried to collect as much information as possible about Hakka’s current situation by interviewing some experts and scholars, doing literature review and surfing the internet. All the information we got was beneficial to our study, we especially appreciate those interviewees’ support and suggestions. Then, based on the information we collected, we designed a questionnaire to find out young people’s attitudes about Hakka culture and the feasibility of learning Hakka language through English pronunciation. Finally, we selected the study contents.

In order to attract young people to view our website, we chose some popular and interesting Hakka ballads and slang, as our study contents. Three main tasks were included: English Roman phonetic notation, Chinese meaning and English translation. We did both literal and free English translation so that we can keep the origins and fun of Hakka language. Furthermore, to break the stereotyped poor images of Hakka ballads, we tried to dance to and recite them along with pop music. If people are interested in our effort, they can go to our interactive website to view our performance and enjoy their Hakka language learning.
