| San Juan is located roughly 9,000 feet above sea level in the beautiful highlands of Guatemala. Its a guiet cozy pubelo where you can begin to appreciate the Mayan culture of Guatemala. San Juan's busy market day is Sunday and due to its prime location, vendors come from the costal towns to all over the altiplano brining fresh veggies, fruits, meats, and arts. San Juan, itself, however is known for its amazing hand made wicker furniture. Like all of Guatemala, San Juan enjoys celebrations. The biggest days for San Juan are in June and July. El Dia de San Juan is a festival of fun for all San Juaneros and in July the Gigantes dance around the streets passing out snacks to all the children. San Juan is a unique crossroads for travelers. You can catch a bus to the Pacific Coast (Costa Sur) and visit pubelos like San Martin, where even the men still where traditional clothing, or Colomba, Coatepeque, and Champerico to get a feel of costal life. You can also catch a bus through the department of San Marcos and head up to Mexico. Closer to home, you can visit Guatemala's second largest city, Quetzaltenango (Xela), only 15 kilometers from San Juan. Or hike up to the enchanting Laguna de Chicabal. This lagoon is settled in a volcanic crater and every May Mayan Priests travel there to render offerings of thanks and ask for blessings in the coming year. San Juan Ostuncalco is a small town off the beaten path but offers travelers a taste of everyday life and the opportunity to enjoy the rich colors of the Highlands. |
