HARRY POTTER 2001 18"x24" Watercolor Property of private collection This was my first portrait of Harry done last year. I was never really satisfied with it (watercolors are hard for me to use with portraits), but decided to include it here...

HARRY POTTER (a la PARISH) 2001 20"x28.5" Acrylic on matte board. Property of private collection. This painting is one of my personal favorites. To anyone who wonders what all the fuss is about, I was just like you -- until I started reading the damn books, and finished all four within a month's time. I wanted to paint a portrait of Harry in the style of the great Maxfield Parrish -- whose fantastical, highly stylish illustrations, filled with vivid colors and beautiful renditions of light, seemed appropriate in tone for the young fictitious wizard. In this case, I used an Annie Leibowitz photograph of actor Daniel Radcliffe from a recent VANITY FAIR issue as a reference for Harry, and set it against a backdrop inspired by Parrish's Ecstasy (1929).

CHAMBER OF SECRETS 2002 19.5" x 29.5" Acrylic and colored pencils on matte board. Property of private collection. A recent painting, this one was a challenge. The above image is considerably darker than the original, thanks to a poor quality scan. (A hi-res, improved image will be available shortly, showing details and colors you can't see here.) This work, of course, used a recent Entertainment Weekly photo of Radcliffe as a reference.
