Camp 8th La Inft, Reg of A.D., May 11th, 1863James,
Yesterday I got a letter from you. It had been to the Reg. John had opened it and wrote some in it. I was really glad to hear from home once more, and to get a few lines from John. I have nothing new under the sun to write you. In fact, I have written so much about the negro that I am getting ashamed to write negro, but I must write negro to you or nothing at all. We are getting along with our Reg very well. They learn everything very fast. We have drawn a good article of second class guns and have sent for clothing etc., which will be here in a week. We have dress parade every evening. I know it would be a show to you to see us out, but I really never saw men do better, to be no longer in the service. My 2nd Lt and myself drill the Co. about five hours a day. I call it pretty tall drilling these hot days. We have regular guard mount every day. I have been officer of the day twice. You ought to see the [undecipherable] I put on. Yesterday was Sunday. We received plenty of preaching by darkeys.![]()
