We have guard mount each morning, and officer of the day, and everything done up as near right as new soldiers can do it. I have been officer of the day twice. I sent yesterday for a sword and belt, fancy hat, shoulder straps, officer coat, vest, pants, and gauntlets. I do not expect to get the coat, vest, and pants, as they will not know how to fit me. Baltzell sent for fancy hat, pin jacket, etc. I sent $130 to pay for my things. If they do not get the coat, pants, and vest, it will not take over fifty dollars to buy the rest. The Captains drew for letters and rank of our Cos. I drew Co. B. Second Ranking Captain, about two higher than I wanted. If it is not too sickly here this summer, I am going to ask some of you to come down. Tell your wife I have not seen that letter from her yet. My respects to L. [undecipherable]. I hope Sarah A. and James are in their own house. Direct letters to Lake Providence, 8th La Inft., Reg of African Descent, Co B. Care [of] Col. H. [undecipherable]. Remember William
