Pittsburg Landing, April 16, 1862

My sweet little girl, eight months ago about this time in the evening I left you and the rest of my dear family. Oh, how well I remember that time. Little did I think though that I would not see you long before this. Zetty, I wrote you a letter, I think before the fight, but really I have forgot. If before the fight, little did I think then what I had to pass through so soon, but thank God I got through safe. Will I be living to say so after the next fight. Oh my God, I hope so. How could I leave this world without seeing your dear face. I would like to have your likeness, but it would be so uncertain about it coming that you need not send it. You know the Secesh have you a prisoner along with Leander. Zetty, I write this to let you know that through the kindness of Col Pease and [undecipherable] I send my overcoat, and James Keeney's and I think one pair of gloves in Keeney's coat pockets. My coat is the new one with red lining and no pockets. Keeney's has pockets and lined with black, I think, not red anyway. Do what you please with mine or keep it for me and give Keeney's to his father and the gloves if any. Tell him I sent it thinking he would like to have something to remember Jim by. Zetty, Remember your pa, William
