for your own satisfaction, I will tell you that I have not sworn an oath in over one month, except one. In the fight, I was at the head of Co. and in the front rank. Sim Copple in fighting got himself behind me and about five feet from me. I was lying down on my belly loading, and just as I raised up to shoot, Sim blazed away, and I thought in my sole my head was bursted wide open. I jumped up on my knees and said, "God Almighty damn you, come into the ranks and fight." I then called McKee and told him if he did not keep them damned boys in ranks, I would get out of their way, for I would not stand two fires. I have not sworn since. Do not think Sim was cowardly, for he is a brave boy. I have just drawn and divided five days provisions. I have no hope of getting to go home, so say nothing to me about a furlough. I read the Scab. All of you write, this is six letters I have written to Centralia since the fight. Sarah, is there no good ink in Centralia. It is very hard for me to read. Get another bottle and try it. Zetty, remember your pa. Did you get my letter, Zetty? Sarah, remember William

Send my letters to Kate.
